THE READ RIDE Bike Tour In Memory of Charlotte Read
READ HOUSE TO CAROL COOK OVERLOOK BIKE TOUR
Join us for PCC's first Bike Tour September 28. Travel 16.8 miles round trip. We start to gather in the Discovery Charter School parking lot at 9am. Set off at 10am sharp for the historic Read House on Tremont in Porter. There will be a small talk on the history of the house and what it meant to the preservation of the Dunes, now National Park. We'll meet Herb Read and honor the memory of his wife Charlotte Read. Cyclists then proceed through duneland prairie and woodland to their destination at PCC's Carol Cook Wetland Overlook. Riders may view birds from the boardwalk birding platform, meet a bird rescued by Humane Indiana Wildlife and have lunch with Discovery Trackers 4-H Club.

family hunting heritage program
PCC's new Family Hunting Heritage program has been funded by the IWLA National Endowment grant. We are so grateful to them for their generosity and approval.
This program provides equipment, training and opportunity for our new Family Members in outdoor recreation. PCC is actively reaching into the community to offer this program to families of NW Indiana. This is also a great way to increase our membership and share all we have to offer.
BECOME A MENTOR! Contact Annette Hansen 219-241-7431 executivedirectoriwlapcc@gmail.com TODAY.
NOTE: All hunters must be IWLA-PCC members in good standing to participate. And must adhere to rules set forth by the PCC board.

Grants awarded to local Izaak Walton chapter
The Porter County Chapter (PCC) was awarded two grants from the Izaak Walton League of America (IWLA) Endowment at their annual convention in Des Moines in July. The E-STEM in the Field grant will pay the expenses of up to 16 classes and volunteer experts to visit the Frame Family Conservation Area to study and report on the restoration of wetlands, prairie and woodlands on the property. Professional from NIPSCO and others from across northern Indiana will guide the classes on site from fifth- and sixth-grade classes from Porter and LaPorte County. PCC also was awarded a NiSource Environmental Action grant and a grant from the Indiana Division IWLA Endowment to support the E-STEM in the Field project. Classes will be developed exclusively for girls as part of a national effort to get more women into the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

IWLA CLEAN WATER CHALLENGE
PCC gets BUGGY with visitors!
apple fest
Enjoy lots of fall seasonal activities such as tractor-pulled hayrides, a Kid’s Corner with games and crafts, and even apple-chucking. Local musicians will provide continuous entertainment and the Northwest Indiana Storytellers will be spinning tales. Then help make cider using an apple press, learn how to cook apples for applesauce and apple butter, ferment apples into vinegar, make apple pomanders and discover dozens of other uses for apples. Free tasting of most of these products will be available. Or, purchase lunch or a snack from one of several food vendors and make a day of it.
