Check out what's happening in the NMES Media Center!
Welcome
Welcome to the newsletter for the NMES Media Center! Read below for information and updates on media center programs and lessons. If you have any questions or need more information, please email Mrs. Siderius, our media specialist, at jennifer.siderius@fcps.org.
Google Hangout
Second grade students have studied in the moon in their classrooms and completed a STEM challenge to build a moon base. To assist in their research, all 2nd grade classes visited the media center to participate in a Google Hangout with a Challenger Learning Center in Paducah, KY. The students asked many moon-related questions to the space experts there!
Coding Continues!
We had so much fun with the Hour of Code week in December! We've continued our coding well into the winter, as with this 1st grade class completing a no-tech coding challenge! 5th grade students researched explorer Ferdinand Magellan's voyages and created maps to send our Ozobots on the same trips on world maps!
Capstone eBooks
The media center owns 200 ebooks that may be used for free by any NMES family! The fiction and nonfiction books will open on any device and are always available. Visit the media center website and click on Capstone to enjoy them! Email Mrs. Siderius for the username and password!
Dash Into Reading Contest
Mrs. Siderius is excited to announce a new reading contest called Dash Your Way into Reading for our school! This contest will run February 6th-24th. Each homeroom will have a robot on a game board outside of the media center. Each class' goal is to be the first to move their robot from the start line to the finish line. They move their robot by reading for fun and logging those minutes on a Google Form. The Google Form will be linked on the front page of the school website beginning February 6th! Students may log their reading minutes daily or once a week, whichever is most convenient. Each Friday, Mrs. Siderius will total the scores on our Google Form and move the game pieces to show which homerooms are in the lead! The first homeroom in each of these categories (Prek/Kdg/1st, 2nd/3rd, and 4th/5th) will win an extra media visit to learn how to use our new Dot & Dash robots! Please email Mrs. Siderius if you have any questions!
