Teacher Appreciation Week
A Message from the PE Teachers:
On Friday May 5, the early release day from school, we will have the Emerald Isle Ocean Rescue Coordinator, Mr. William Matthias at WOES to discuss water safety with our students. On this date, Mr. Matthias will talk to the children about being safe on the beach and in the ocean and other bodies of water, as well as what the town’s official beach warning flags represent. Mr. Matthias oversees the Ocean Rescue Program through the Emerald Isle Fire Department, which employs 20 USLA-certified (United States Lifesaving Association) lifeguards that are on the beach strand from April 1 through September to best serve the public. He will give an in-depth look at the beach warning flags, and will explain that Emerald Isle, and the other towns on Bogue Banks, do not fly green flags, since there are always inherent dangers when swimming in the ocean, and it is never completely safe. It is important to always use caution and to respect the ocean, in addition to paying attention to the beach warning flags and talking to lifeguards about how to remain safe while enjoying the beach. As of last year, the four towns along Bogue Banks produced official beach safety videos together as another piece of the town’s rigorous beach safety messaging. With summer approaching we want all of our students to always think and practice safety when around bodies of water in our beautiful area.
