Teacher Feature
Mrs. Hughes utilized the SIOP components of INTERACTION (feature 16: Frequent Interactions and Discussion) and PRACTICE and APPLICATION (Feature 20: Provide Hands-on Materials) (Feature 21: Provide activities for students to apply content and language), in order to deepen their learning of the term, template. Students learned the term's definition, talked about what it means, how to use the term, and used a template to prepare their expressionist paintings for their explosion books.
Students reflected on their learning by completing the sentence, "Using a template was helpful because. . . "
Examples of students' work: "Using a template today was helpful because it made all the squares the same shape and size." Another student said, "It helped me draw straight lines." Another student said, "The template helped me cut perfectly."
Ultimately, students met the success criteria, and had practice using their new tool, a template, while creating an awesome project! Here is her slide deck.

Strengthening School and Family Partnerships
Families should be active participants in the life of the school, and feel welcomed, valued, and connected to each other, to school staff, and to what students are learning and doing in class.
Family engagement is a key element of successful English Learner programming. Families who speak a language other than English may be reluctant to come to school events if they aren’t sure an interpreter will be present. They may feel unable to help their child with homework in English, or be afraid that sharing their opinions in educational decisions will undermine the authority of the school. Each family and each local context brings different assets and unique needs, which makes effective two‐way communication in an appropriate language challenging, but essential.

Curriculum Support Materials Now Available for 2020 U.S. Census
Census Day is April 1, 2020. As part of the lead up to the Constitutionally-mandated, once-a-decade census count, the Census Bureau’s Statistics in Schools (SIS) program is preparing for the launch of new pre-K through 12th grade activities this fall! The SIS program provides classroom learning opportunities and worksheets illustrating the importance of the 2020 Census. Students will be encouraged to take the information home. Please see suggested curriculum and free materials at the United States Census Bureau’s “Statistics in Schools" site.
