Social Studies
These next two weeks not only bring our study of European History to a close, but also wrap our study of Europe for the year. This upcoming week, we will start off by having students attend the Signs of Suicide Prevention Assembly with Mrs. Turner – information about this activity went out through Homeroom last week. If you have any questions about the program, please contact your child’s Homeroom teacher or Mrs. Turner. We will then spend Tuesday reviewing what students learned about the Cold War this week, before having students work on their own project on the Cold War. For this project, students will either be creating a political cartoon of their own design about an event in the Cold War or they will create a full newspaper front page about an event in the Cold War. Students will be working on this project in class on Wednesday and Thursday, and turn it in by the end of class Thursday. Then, on Friday, we will have a guest speaker come talk with all the students about Veteran’s Day.
The following week, we will spend Monday reviewing with students before their test on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday will be the short essay portion of the test – this “essay” can be anywhere from one long paragraph to a full five paragraph essay in length, depending on the writer. Students will have three choices to choose from when writing their essay. Each essay choice will be pulled from concepts we have studied longer and will be concepts that have multiple parts. On Wednesday, students will take the multiple choice portion of the test online. We would appreciate any help you could provide in making sure iPads are well charged for Wednesday. More specific information about the test, as well as the study guide, etc. will be coming soon (if it has not already) from your child’s Social Studies teacher. We will wrap up our study of Europe with a two day activity on current events in Europe, utilizing Newsela to find articles and allowing students choice as to which current event they would like to learn about.
ELA
ELA is wrapping up our unit in narrative study! We have been looking at how exactly authors craft compelling novels and stories, including the specific ways in which authors develop plot, setting, and theme (RL5), as well as the various points of view a story’s narrator can assume (RL6). As we study author’s craft in our choice novels, we also apply our understanding to our own personal narratives, which are reaching completion! We will have our test that culminates this unit on Friday, November 10. This major assessment grade will assess student mastery over the following topics/concepts: author’s development of theme in a narrative, the ways in which setting is developed throughout a story, author’s development of plot, narrative point of view, and a short answer section on characterization. Students will have access to a study guide beginning today to assist with review! Our next unit is focused on informational texts, and more information will be sent out on upcoming material soon.

We are finishing Unit 2: Rates, Ratios and Proportional Reasoning Using Equivalent Fractions. Students will use rates and unit rate to create equations, tables and graphs with equations. (6.RP.3a, b). Students will find the percent of a quantity and solve percent problems by finding the percent, whole or part (6.RP.3c). The study guide will be handed out on 11/8, and is due on 11/13. The Unit 2 test is on 11/14. We will then begin Unit 3 Expressions. Students will evaluate expression using the order of operations (6.EE.1) and evaluate and write expressions in which letters stand for numbers (6.EE.2).
6A:
We are finishing up Unit 3 Part 1. Our quiz is on Tuesday November 7th. This will cover properties (7.EE.2), parts of an expression (7.EE.2), and simplifying expressions (7.EE.1). After the quiz we will be solving one-step equations (7.EE.3) and solving equation word problems (7.EE.4a). The test will be Friday November 17th.

We are finishing Unit 2, Part 1, Expressions and Equations. We will have a test on Thursday, 11/9. The study guide was given out today, 11/3. It will cover the definitions of properties of operations, identifying the parts of an expression, simplifying expressions by combining like terms, the distributive property, factoring out variables and coefficients from linear expressions, translating algebraic expressions into words and words into algebraic expressions, and solving one step equations with all rational numbers. (MCC.8.EE.7, MCC.7.EE.1, MCC.7.EE.2, MCC.7.EE.3, MCC.7.EE.4) We will begin part 2 of Unit 2, we will cover 2-step equations including the distributive property. (MCC.8.EE.7, MCC.7.EE.1, MCC.7.EE.2, MCC.7.EE.3, MCC.7.EE.4)

Science:
Over the next two weeks students will be finishing up Part 2 of the Geology Unit. We will be learning about soil, creating presentations about Human Impact on Erosion, and reviewing for our test! The study guide will be distributed through Google Classroom on Wednesday, 11/8 and due one week later on Wednesday, 11/15.
We are adding pages to our Science ISNs (Interactive Student Notebook) almost every day! Ask your student to show you what they’ve been working on! The ISN and Review Resource Pages (in the “About” section of Google Classroom) are always excellent resources to study and practice.
Upcoming Dates:
· Wednesday, 11/8: Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition Quiz
o Textbook: Chapter 10 Section 1, Chapter 11 Section 1, Chapter 12
· Monday, 11/13: Human Impact on Erosion Project Presentations
· Thursday, 11/16: Geology II Test: Rocks, Minerals, Weathering, Erosion, Deposition, and Soil
o Textbook: Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 10, Chapter 11 Section 1, Chapter 12
