MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
We have reached the end of a unique school year and begin to look forward to the excitement of summer. What a year we have had! From full remote to hybrid learning and everything in between, you and your student(s) have demonstrated resilience, patience, compassion, and grit. I am so proud of the amazing work our Panthers have accomplished this year. As you are making plans for the summer, please keep in mind the importance of reading in your daily schedule. Your child has worked hard throughout the school year to make positive strides in the area of reading and we want to ensure that this upward trend continues to take place.
While it didn’t look “normal,” we stayed positive – and best of all, we learned! As we finish our school year, I have a couple of reminders.
Fifth-grade celebration drive-thru event scheduled for Monday, June 21, from 5:00-6:30 pm.
K-4 celebration drive-thru event, Tuesday, June 22, 5:00-6:30 pm.
Our staff and PTA are working hard to make our end of year special and memorable for our students by passing out popcorn and snow cones during the drive-thrus.
Students may keep Chromebooks through the summer if remaining in Peninsula School District.
We will miss many of our Purdy Families as they are redistricted to Swift Water.
If you are moving away from Peninsula School District, please be sure to return your device during the drive-thru or communicate a time with your teacher.
The last day of school is June 23, 9:00-12:15, and will be an asynchronous, or independent, learning day for most students K-5. Options’ students will attend in person on June 23, 9:00-12:15.
As we finish these last couple of weeks strong, I want to express my deepest gratitude for the incredible partnerships and support we’ve had from our community this school year. This school is a special place full of wonderful students, teachers, staff, and families.
Behind all of the success this year, are the dedicated and energetic teachers and staff at Purdy and a PTA. A sincere thanks to each of you! To the parents of Purdy, we express our admiration and appreciation for your cooperation and support. It has also been a sincere pleasure and privilege to have the opportunity to work with your children and watch them grow this year. They each have a bright future ahead of them, and we look forward to learning of their success in the years to come whether it is at Purdy, Swift Water, or elsewhere.
As with most years, the close of a school year also brings about change. I want to wish staff and students leaving Purdy Elementary for various reasons, all the best in their future endeavors. We will miss our staff and students impacted by the redistricting and wish you the best at Swift Water Elementary. Redistricting also impacted our staffing at Purdy, and we will miss staff members as they begin a new chapter. A special good-bye to Mrs. McDonald, Mrs. Stuart, Mrs. Yost, Miss Shaw, Mrs. Sumrall, Mrs. McNelis, Mrs. Lantz, Ms. Jennifer Peterson, and Mrs. Moore.
Congratulations to all of our students on their successful completion of the school year, especially to the 5th Grade students. As our 5th grader students move on to Harbor Ridge Middle School, they will certainly be missed and they will always proudly represent Purdy Panthers.
Regrettably, we will continue to expect enrollment and staffing changes throughout the summer due to the redistricting process, and Covid. As a result we will be unable to communicate your child’s teacher for the 2021-2022 school year until the beginning of the 21-22 school year. We will continue to monitor our enrollment and work through the summer to finalize staffing and student placements. In making class assignments, our goal is to place each child in a class in which he or she can be most successful while maintaining a balance among classes in terms of gender, academic ability, disciplinary and social needs, learning styles, and individual needs of the students. Please keep in mind we cannot guarantee special requests. With possible staff changes, we want to ensure students are placed in a classroom in which they will be successful.
In closing, it has been my pleasure getting to know not only your child, but you as well. Having parental support and open lines of communication is an essential part of any successful school year. Thank you for all you’ve done to make our year so fulfilling and memorable. We look forward to continued success for the year 2021-2022. Cheers to a summer full of rest, relaxation, and fun! I look forward to seeing each of you in the fall.

Message from the vice principal
Dear Purdy Family and Friends,
It is with a heavy heart I am writing to inform you I will not be returning to Purdy next school year. As the district is restructuring and addressing budget concerns the position of assistant principal is changing to become a dean of students. I wrestled with the decision to stay or not, and in the end I decided to seek another administrative position, moving my career forward.
The past 9 years have truly been the highlight of my career. A huge piece of my heart will always be with Purdy. I have been blessed to serve the community of Purdy as a school counselor and as your assistant principal. I know the amazing things I have experienced here will continue to happen, as this is an amazing and supportive community.
If you see me around the harbor please be sure to stop me to say hello. I know, once a Panther always a Panther, and I am proud to call myself a Panther! I can’t wait to hear what the future holds for each of you.

Last Day Schedule Wednesday, June 23, 2021
This year the last day of school falls on Wednesday, June 23. On Wednesdays this year, with minimal exceptions, students have been learning from home. That will again be the case on the last day of school -- a half day of school (9AM-Noon) will be held for all students, virtually.
We know that for our primary grade students (K-2), learning has not been virtual for several months, especially for K-1. If you do not have a device on which your student will be able to connect for the last day of school, please let us know and we will attempt to provide one. Your child’s teacher will communicate if they will be providing activities with a chromebook or without on the last day.
This will not be 3 hours of straight academic Zooming; the entire school will connect at 11 AM for a closing activity, and there will be individual class activities between 9:00-11:00. There will also be additional in-person end-of-year celebrations earlier that week in classrooms.
For students who have been connecting via district-provided Hotspots, please return the Hotspot to the office some time the afternoon of the 23rd by 3:30. The office will also be open the 24th and 25th, 9:00 - 3:30.
The last in-person day for K-5 students, not in Options, will be Tuesday, June 22nd.

If the encouraged time above doesn’t work for your family, feel free to come at a time that works best for you. This event will take place in the Purdy Parking Lot. Teachers will have a lane for cars to turn left down. Students will receive popcorn, snowcones, and other year-end items. Students can also turn in books or other items during this time. One car per family and families must stay in their vehicle at all times. Since this is a school event, please wear masks while communicating with staff. Current teachers, administrators and other Purdy staff will be standing outside, cheering on our students! We encourage you to have fun and decorate your car to help celebrate your child! If you have any questions, please contact your homeroom teacher.

Each activity is meant to encourage reflection, create a sense of belonging, help let go of what is no longer useful, and move forward in an intentional (and I hope fun!) way. Enjoy!
Jumpstart for K & 1
When: August 16th-20th, 9:00 am to 11:45 am
What: Jumpstart allows your child to have a solid start to school! They will meet new friends, get to know the new school building, and build their confidence and independence!
- Incoming Kindergarteners and 1st graders who have not had an in-person school experience or formal preschool.
- Families who are new to our school First-time Kindergarten families
- Any child who might need help transitioning to school.

A Summer tip from your School Occupational Therapist
Summer is upon us and we are all looking forward to more free time in our days. That can come with a downside too, as many respond well to a sense of routine in our day- something that school naturally provides. If you are having some anxiety as a parent around how to keep your kids’ days balanced and healthy, one way to support that is through a simple checklist. Pick 4 or 5 activities you are sure you want to fulfill to check off each day. When we fill our days with these simple priorities, we are more likely to aim for balance overall.
One idea is to use the American Pediatric Association’s rule-of-thumb to support children’s health which is the “5-2-1-0 Rule”. This is to help make sure to have: 5 fruits or vegetables, 2 hours of screen time, 1 hour of physical exercise and 0 sugary drinks per day. Ideally, for older grades, I make checklists that kids could monitor themselves to promote intrinsic motivation. In my family, we aren’t always perfect, but it gives us a guideline to work with so that our days are filled with a variety of activities, and we could track how out of bounds we had been.
You can either make one copy and put it in a plastic sleeve with dry-erase markers to reuse each week or fill a binder with 8 weeks’ worth. Feel free to fill these in with other priorities that fit your family dynamic. Other ideas are reading for 1 hr, practicing music, art making, a chore, specific sports activities, pet care, etc.. And if you want to add a reward at the end of the week, that is totally fine!

SUMMER MEAL KITS 2021
Starting June 24, 2021 through September 2, 2021, the PSD Nutrition Office will have meal kits available for children up to the age of 18 during summer break.
***Families are still encouraged to complete and submit Free and Reduced Meal Applications***
Meals kits include breakfast and lunch items and will be available for pick up at a meal site or along a meal route. Meals picked up on a Thursday cover Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
When a student under the age of 18 unaccompanied by an adult picks up meals for multiple individuals, such as siblings, the state requires we record on a form the names of students who will be receiving the meals. Students picking up meals for themselves do not need to provide information, but when meals for multiple people are picked up, we ask who they are intended for as verification.
