Mustang Message
March 21, 2016
A Message from Jeff and Yolanda
We went on Spring Break on a high with Nancy Turmelle being named post-secondary teacher of the year. Nancy, along with the other District Teachers of the year will be honored at the Champions for Learning dinner on April 1st.
Where has the year gone? Spring break has come and gone and before you know it graduation will be upon us. While many of us were busy recharging, Jack Izbicki spent the week at school facilitating the 2016 Antique Automobile Club of America. Winter Meet . AACA members came from throughout the United States to show their cars on our campus. On Saturday they were treated to a delicious breakfast and dinner organized by Chef Geri. The event provided the school with nationwide recognition as well as scholarship dollars for students. Thank you to Jack Izbicki and his wife Mary who spend countless hours in the community promoting our school.
And now we come back at full speed with a jammed pack week which includes instructional rounds and 170 Osceola Elementary students touring the school. All of you will be participating in the 2nd instructional round planned for the school year where you will have an opportunity to observe engagement strategies. According to Dr. Marzano:
"Instructional rounds are one of the most valuable tools that a school or district can use to enhance teachers' pedagogical skills and develop a culture of collaboration. The primary purpose is for observing teacher is to compare their own instructional practices with those of the teachers they observe. The chief benefit of this approach resides in the discussion that takes place among observing teachers at the end of the observation as well as in subsequent self-reflection."
Although timing is never good we are committed to ensuring you have an opportunity to collaborate with your peers. Jeff will be sending out additional details as we get ready for instructional rounds on Wednesday and Thursday, Thank you to Jeff and Pat Metcalf for coordinating such a powerful professional envelopment.
Tech Corner
Post-Spring Break can be a challenging time to keep your students engaged as they (and maybe you too?!) think about the end of the semester. Investing in some new instructional strategies can sometimes keep them thinking! Have you tried Six Word Story from Spotlight on Strategies? Provide students with a reading selection, image or video that supports a concept you are teaching. Then ask them to create a ‘six word story’ to capture the concept and post on a teacher-created Padlet board so all can view. Here’s a screenshot of one we did at a Digital Leaders meeting with an image related to Black History month.
Web on Wednesday is scheduled for Wed, Mar 20th at either 2:00 or 2:35pm in 2-233. This session will focus on Outlook Mail and Calendar Tips. With the need to stay in communication and organized, are you making the best use of the tools at hand? Join us and see if you can add to the list of tips and tricks to make Outlook work for you!
Check out what these futurists promote as future jobs within the next ten years - wow!
A Note from the Wellness Champions
Congratulation to the Biggest Losers Mrs. Whippo and Mr. Parnell. Total we lost 109 lbs and we are still competing for district winner. Thank you again for participating and making this so fun and successful.
Just another reminder from your Wellness Champions - - the deadline for the Pathways blood draw is rapidly approaching. The deadline is 4/1/16. We have heard from many employees that the morning appointments are almost full through the third week in March. If an employee cannot get an appointment for a Quest site, the best option would be to schedule an appointment here at the MLK building on 3/30 or 3/31 or in Immokalee at ITEC on 3/28 or 3/29. If anyone is having a problem scheduling, please contact Joanna Ciani at 377-0353 or Dayli Christiano at 377-0710. Also, if anyone needs a mammogram, here is the schedule for the mobile mammo unit. Anyone can use this method, even if you are not at that particular school (even volunteers and parents):
o Highlands Elementary (Immokalee) Wednesday, March 9, 7 AM to Noon
o Avalon Elementary Friday, March 11, 11:30 AM to 5 PM
o Lorenzo Walker Tech/High Wednesday, March 23, 11 AM to 5 PM
o Oakridge Middle Wednesday, March 30, 8 AM to Noon
o Gulf Coast High Tuesday, April 12, 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM
o Immokalee High School Thursday, April 21, 12:30 PM to 5 PM

Reminders
LWTC Staff - Individuals on any version of a 236 work calendar or 250 work calendar are scheduled to work on March 25th even though students are not scheduled to be in attendance. There is no rationale behind this other than compensation had to make the calendar work. On those days, we will have professional development and planning time for teachers who are scheduled to work. If you choose not to work, you can take a personal day.
- PLT reflections are due March 31st.
- Don't forget to nominate a staff member for the month of March by clicking on the Padlet link . Type the name of the nominated staff member in the "Title" portion of the Padlet post and your reasoning in the body of the post. Also you can nominate by grade level a student for the month of February by clicking the appropriate link below. Follow the same protocol of putting the student name as the title and reason for nominating in the body of the posting.

Spotlight on LWTHS Staff Member
Stephanie Scott grew up in Eatonton Georgia but moved to Naples because she loves the beach! When not at work you can find her jet skiing with her dog Red! If she could live anywhere it would be a tropical Island where she could spend her days at the beach. Her first job was teaching French & Spanish not knowing ether language! She is now teaching algebra & geometry (which she has totally mastered!)

“Brenn” Harrison-Stevens teaches computer technology to primarily high school dual enrolled students. She is an amateur MMA boxer and currently is undefeated. She works with autistic childern every day after school and she is an avid collector of fossils and bones. Brenn met Ellen DeGeneres before she was famous. Her greatest accomplishment, as most mothers would say is her daughter Troi who is now 22 years old!
