Math Updates
In Math this week, we started our week off reviewing subtraction methods. We continued our week working on practicing multiplication facts and narrowing them down to "facts I know" and "facts I need to work on". We ended our week exploring Geometry concepts, measurement data, and polygons.

Building a READING LIFE
In Reading this week, we continued our Nonfiction Unit. We learned that Narrative Nonfiction stories are much like fiction stories in that they have a beginning, middle, and end. We worked on summarizing these stories to start our week. We then continued on working on using context clues and decoding strategies to solve hard words in our reading, especially if they are necessary to understand the text. Finally we looked at biographies and the important parts of this type of nonfiction book.

Word Study
New sorts on Monday! The tests will be on Feb 1st.
Monday nights- Students are to sort their words and record them in their notebooks. They are to also record their discovery or rule for the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights- Students should sort their words and read them as they sort. They can practice writing them on paper, whiteboards, or typing them. NO WRITTEN homework is required on these nights.
Thursday nights- Students are to ask an adult to quiz them on their words. They write the headers and then record the words as they are called out. The adult should use the notebook to correct the sort and ask the student to practice any words that were spelled incorrectly. This can be done on the back of the homework sheet. This paper should then be returned to school Friday morning.
Friday- there will be a test given
Writing long & strong
This week in Writing, we explored nonfiction books to determine ways to pull our readers into our nonfiction books. We worked hard to create interesting introductions and conclusions for our books. We then set goals that we wanted to achieve before we start publishing. Finally, we read through our books with partners and worked hard to clear up any confusion a reader may have when reading our books.

Cursive
This week we continued working on Hills and Valley letters!
Technology
This week we used kiddle.co to use the internet safely while researching our writing topics. We also used a website called ReadWorks to read short, informational passages. We did Xtra Math and Rocket Math on the iPad. Finally, we played Beat the Computer, Fraction Memory, and Subtraction Top-it on EDM. There is also a free app that I highly recommend called Big Math Flash cards. It takes the timing aspect out of math fact practice and can be set to any operation. Thanks to a current 3rd grader for the great find!
Science
This week we continued our Rocks and Minerals Earth Science Unit by continuing to test rocks and determine their qualities. We also learned about the water cycle and how water effects rocks.
