5 Essentials Survey
Parent feedback is extremely important to me, as it gives a different perspective on how we are doing as a school. The thoughts and ideas expressed through the 5 Essentials Survey provides me, and the rest of the staff, with authentic feedback. If you haven’t submitted a 5 Essentials parent survey, please help me out. Over the past week, we have jumped from 27% to 29% parent participation (Thank you!!!). I would love for this number to get closer to 50%. The window to participate in the 5 Essentials survey runs through February 14th. If you’d like to begin your survey, please click on the link below:

2020-2021 Kindergarten Registration
It was so great to see so many familiar faces, as well as welcome many new faces on Wednesday during Kindergarten Registration. I had the chance to meet several future Mustangs! Registration for incoming kindergarten students is not isolated to this specific day, as new families should simply visit the Munhall main office if you still need to register a student for kindergarten.
One Book, One School—Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library
I hope your family is enjoying the book Mr. Lemoncello’s Library, which is part of our PTO One Book, One School program. This is a reminder the program will conclude with an “Escape from Mr. Buxton’s Library” event on Thursday, February 13th, where parents and students will have the opportunity to engage in BreakoutEDU sessions. In addition, I will be reading the final chapter of the book during the event. The event begins at 6:00.
Valentine’s Parties
Next Friday is our third and final classroom party of the year. Classroom parties begin at 2:00, and parent volunteers will be allowed to enter the building at 1:45. As a reminder, food and candy should not be distributed for valentines, nor should they be available at the classroom parties.
Have a great weekend!

Nurse Notes
Dear Parents,
The peak of the cold and flu season is upon us! Recently, the Nurses at Munhall Elementary have been caring for a number of students experiencing fevers and other cold like symptoms. We are also aware that some students are absent from school because they have been diagnosed with the flu and other influenza-like symptoms. During the months of October through April, each school in District 303 tracks influenza activity in cooperation with the Kane County Health Department. We consult with their staff to determine whether influenza activity in a school warrants additional follow up, and at this time, there is no additional interventions needed. Preventative measures remain the most effective way to reduce the spread of influenza.
Students who present to the Health Office with a fever or are feeling poorly are sent home. To prevent widespread flu in the school, we recommend that your child stay home from school if experiencing flu or cold symptoms. To decide whether or not to send your child to school, please consider the following guidelines:
Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:
Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough
Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)
Headache
Mild stomach ache
Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:
Fever (greater than 100 degrees)
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Chills
General malaise or feelings of fatigue
Frequent congested (wet) or croupy cough
Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose
To help prevent the flu and other illnesses, teach your children good hygiene habits:
Wash hands frequently
Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth
Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, use a paper tissue, throw it away and then wash hands
Avoid close contact with people who are ill
Colds are the most contagious during the first 48 hours. A child who has a fever should remain at home until "fever free" for a minimum of 24 hours without the aid of fever reducing medication. A child who has started antibiotics needs to be on the medication for 24 hours before considered non-contagious and able to return to school. Keeping your ill child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom.
Thank you in advance for helping make this year at school as healthy as possible.
