Louisbourg was also known for its fortifications , which took the original French builders 28 years to complete.The location for the fortress was chosen because it was easy to defend against British ships attempting to either block or attack the St. Lawrence River, at the time the only way to get goods to Canada and its cities of Quebec and Montreal.
