A Message from Mrs. Caudill

One of Amerman's favorite traditions has returned again this year to the delight of all the students and staff. For the last 15 - 20 years, a mama duck has chosen the Amerman courtyard as the location to lay her eggs and raise her ducklings. You cannot help smiling when you see them waddling and quacking. Students love looking into the courtyard as they pass by to see if they can catch of glimpse of them.

While we know not all of the duckling will survive, our staff is taking special care to make sure they have a fighting chance by providing them food, water and shelter. The birth of the ducklings was one of the many things we were not able to take part in last spring due to the closure. Seeing the ducklings again this year is a sign that brighter things are to come.

Stay well,

Devon Caudill

Northville Educational Foundation’s Thank A Staff program

Although Teacher Appreciation Week has passed, there’s still plenty of time to let them know how much you appreciate them! Through the Northville Educational Foundation’s Thank A Staff program, it’s easy to recognize a special teacher, principal, teacher aide, counselor, coach, office staff member, paraprofessional or any other person who makes your child’s educational experience an exceptional one.

For a small donation, your special person will receive a personalized Certificate of Appreciation, customized with your student’s name or family name, your special message AND a reusable tote bag that they will use all year long! It’s a great way to express your gratitude and provide additional funding to support our teachers and students across the district. In addition, your donation is tax-deductible.

Special thanks to Michigan Educational Credit Union for sponsoring Thank A Staff.

District- Wide Cereal Drive

Several years ago Christian Peck-Dimit, a former NHS grad, began a project to partner with Gleaners Food Bank in Detroit on behalf of NHS. Christian knew that over 300,000 children in our metro area live with food insecurity. Many of these children rely on school lunches for the bulk of their nutritional needs each day. The cereal drive began because cereal is fortified, easy to eat, shelf stable, and something most children can serve themselves.

Now his brother Gabriel Peck-Dimit, a junior at NHS is taking the lead, working with Gleaners, supported by Christian. We could not be prouder to watch these compassionate young men step up to organize and lead a project that now includes all Northville Public Schools.

We are asking each Amerman student to bring a box of cereal to school between May 24 and May 28 this year. Gleaners will send a truck to pick up our cereal. We have set a goal for 450 boxes of cereal. Some of the cereal collected will go to local food banks, including Civic Concern.

About Gleaners Community Food Bank

Headquartered in Detroit, Gleaners operates five distribution centers in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Livingston and Monroe counties and provides food to more than 500 partner soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and other agencies throughout southeast Michigan. Each year, Gleaners distributes more than 45 million pounds of food to neighbors in need. This results in an average of 100,000 meals distributed each day to families in need across our region. Gleaners also provides nourishing food and nutrition education to more than 200,000 children a year. Every dollar donated provides three meals and 92 cents of every donated dollar goes to food and food programs. Visit gcfb.org to learn more.

Leader in Me Parent Survey - Due 5/24

As a Leader in Me Lighthouse School we are always working on continuous improvement. Each year we ask parents to take a short survey. These surveys are used to annually collect, analyze, and report student, staff, and school-level outcomes related to the focus on improving leadership, culture, and academics. They help us identify our strengths and weaknesses, develop improvement plans, and monitor progress. Please complete the survey below. All of your responses are completely anonymous. The survey should take you approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.

Speaking of being a Lighthouse School, I am excited to announce that we were just recertified as a Lighthouse School! This certification is good for another two years. Thanks to our students, staff and community for all their support. Without us working together to strengthen leadership within, this would not be possible.

May Focus: Integrity! Habit 8: Find your Voice!

Every month Amerman Focuses on a new theme and Leader in Me Habit of the Month. The focus for the month of May is Integrity and our Habit of the Month is Habit 8: Find you Voice!

This month’s Habit: Habit #8 - Find your Voice

What this means: Find your voice means finding something that you are good at and like doing. You are proud, but do not boast. Instead, you use your expertise to help and inspire others.

Physical: Learn your true nature and gifts, then use them to envision what you can achieve.

Social/Emotional: We all have a purpose and special talents.

Mental: Transcend the negative culture of ego, scarcity, comparison, and competitiveness.

Spiritual: Be a catalyst to the success of something bigger than ourselves.

What I can do:

  • Try something new like painting, horseback riding, or baseball. Then ask yourself: Did I enjoy myself? Was it easy or hard? Do I want to learn more?
  • Go to the library or search the internet to find reading material on new things. What kinds of things spark your interest? What do you want to continue learning about?
  • Plan some time to help someone in need. How did the experience make you feel?

Great Books for Habit #8- Find Your Voice

  • Wonder by: R.J. Palacio
  • The Lion Inside by: Rachel Bright
  • Separate is Never Equal by: Duncan Tonatiuh
  • Wonderland by: Barbara O'Connor
  • Those Shoes by: Maribeth Boelts
