Poston Road Elementary Pursues Global Competence Training for Staff
Despite the pandemic, Poston Road Elementary (PRE) in Martinsville, Indiana has persisted in their pursuit to bring language skills, global competence and culture to their local students both within and beyond their dual language immersion program strand. The entire PRE staff is engaging in a 12-week global competence certification where they have already started learning about culture, values and belief systems, identity, and communication and conflict styles. Their training is both helping the staff become more personally self-aware and become more aware of others, but also it is pushing them to look at how to develop those same skills in their students.
In the photo, the staff and their two facilitators took a moment to smile for a photo before diving in to their first synchronous dialogue session about the content that they learned asynchronously in the previous two weeks. In January and February, the staff will continue their blended learning experience and learn about curbing stereotypes, understanding inequality, examining microaggressions and learning how power and privilege affect us and others. Congratulations to MSD Martinsville for pursuing global competence training for the staff where social emotional learning meets intentionality toward a more inclusive and equitable school environment.
If you would like to learn more about how to bring this training to your staff, reach out to Jill Woerner at jwoerner@afsusa.org to request a demo of the online training modules and/or discuss timelines and options to customize this opportunity for your community!

Research from Purdue University
Over two years, Purdue has studied the performance and growth of Spanish proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing among emergent bilingual students in three types of language programs: English as a Second Language (ESL), dual language 50/50 and dual language 90/10. Controlling for student and school level demographics, it has been found that emergent bilingual students in the dual language program did best in writing and the most impactful agent in this performance and progress was the teacher. The second highest performing were emergent bilinguals in an ESL program, where 100% of their instruction is in English. Surprisingly, those performing at the lowest level were emergent bilinguals in a dual language 50/50. Implications point to the ‘Spanish clock’ often running out on time and thus, less attention focused on Spanish writing experiences. Stay tuned for more on these findings from Purdue.
