GREAT STUFF Going on In Our Schools

World Without Teachers

Teacher Appreciation Week in Kenilworth

Dear Staff:

On behalf of our entire school community, I would like to thank each teacher and all of the other members of our school community who make our school district what it is. Many times, the work of our teachers goes beyond the call of duty and each of us knows of the impact that one of our teachers had on us as students. This week serves as a time to stop for a minute and say THANKS to each educator who works each day to make a difference with our students.

On my first day, I shared some of my philosophy which included the statement that everyone needs to bring their "A" game each day as our kids depend on it. Teacher Appreciation Week also allows us to have a time to reflect on what the product of our work is as well and appreciate the mark that you make each day.

With this, I share one of my favorite poems, which was written by legendary writer Grantland Rice (1956) titled, "Game Called."

Game Called. Across the field of play
the dusk has come, the hour is late.
The fight is done and lost or won,
the player files out through the gate.
The tumult dies, the cheer is hushed,
the stands are bare, the park is still.
But through the night there shines the light,
home beyond the silent hill.

Game Called. Where in the golden light
the bugle rolled the reveille.
The shadows creep where night falls deep,
and taps has called the end of play.
The game is done, the score is in,
the final cheer and jeer have passed.
But in the night, beyond the fight,
the player finds his rest at last.

Game Called. Upon the field of life
the darkness gathers far and wide,
the dream is done, the score is spun
that stands forever in the guide.
Nor victory, nor yet defeat
is chalked against the players name.
But down the roll, the final scroll,
shows only how he played the game.

I am proud to be your Superintendent and THANK YOU for the work that you do.

Family Math = Fun Times

Our Family Math Program was an adventure in exploring math ideas, learning games, and enhancing math concepts that children learned in class. Our students participated in a variety of activities led by Mrs. Jernigan and Mr. Klimchak that allowed them to work closely with their parents. At the end of the program, the students and parents worked together to create carnival games based on various mathematical concepts. Pictures from each night where posted to our Family Math Instagram account. Overall, we had 14 amazing families attend, and it was a great success!

The Executive Board of the PTO is prepared to accept teacher Mini-Grant applications from the David Brearley Middle/High school staff once again. Former president, Cyndie Manto, began the Mini-Grant program at Harding School back in 2002 and then in the high school in 2004.
