Colt Corner
Colleyville Middle School
April 22, 2022
Colts,
Today we had a chance to have an extended lunch for all of our Colts giving them some additional time to enjoy the sunshine and friends, which is always a great way to wrap up the school week.
This week our Colt Tennis teams put the cherry on top of their successful undefeated season! Also this week in athletics, many of our 8th grade student-athletes began traveling to their zoned high schools during the athletics class period in order to begin to get acclimated to their future coaches and sports programs at Colleyville Heritage and Grapevine High Schools. Being able to coordinate and offer this to our student-athletes is just another advantageous offering that we provide as a school district to benefit our students and extracurricular programs.
Yesterday we had a fun club day, giving our Colts an opportunity to engage in something different in the school day during the advisory period. It is fun to see our Colts engaging with teachers and peers that they don’t usually have an opportunity to be with during the school day.
A big congratulations to our Choir program for performing and receiving Superior ratings at the Epic Waters Music Festival yesterday! In addition, our band programs performed very well at Coppell High School this week also receiving the highest marks and Sweepstakes. All of our Colts continue to be busy at school working hard to end the month of April on a high note. It is always nice to be able to provide our Colts outlets through these fun events knowing they are working hard in their academic class settings.
A lot of behind the scenes work goes into these events, and your positive encouragement for our Colts and school community is an important piece of our positive school environment that we have at Colleyville Middle School. Thank you for all that you do to encourage CMS and help make the school be the best it can be. Have a great weekend!

5 Common Reasons a child may not share their feelings with their parent:
1.They don’t want to burden or worry their parent. Some children are very sensitive to their parent’s personal overwhelm and believe they're helping to care for their parent by attempting to manage their issue on their own.
2.The parent feels too busy for the child to approach. Some children simply don’t feel like there is a “good time” to be able to talk with their parent, though they would like to.
3.The parent tries to fix the problem rather than listen to their child. Children want to be validated and understood. If a parent rushes to fix too quickly, they may try to fix the wrong issue, frustrating the child.
4.The parent may be dismissive of the child’s feelings. (i.e. “this isn’t a big deal” or “stop worrying.”) If something feels important to a child but the parent dismisses it, the child may doubt their own discernment on what they need help with and feel shame for asking for help.
5. The parent doesn’t check in again after their child shares once. While a parent may initially show interest or investment initially, they may not continue to work with their child on the issue. Children may be hesitant to initiate bringing the matter up with a parent again.

Standard Response Protocols
In GCISD, the safety and security of our students and staff are our top priority. We have partnered with the I Love You Guys Foundation to implement Standard Response Protocols, or as we called them, SPRs, that are used in emergency situations.
Emergency personnel in Colleyville, Euless and Grapevine work in partnership with GCISD to ensure we keep all students and staff safe. In this video, members of these emergency services and GCISD staff help explain each SRP and its function in keeping students and staff safe. Learn more about GCISD's Security and Emergency Management by clicking here.

Reminder: Lightspeed Relay Parent Portal
The purpose of the Lightspeed Relay Parent Portal is to partner with parents to raise good digital citizens. Each week, parents receive an email called the Relay Portal Weekly Report that comes out Sunday evening with information about their child's browsing activity. The weekly parent report contains:
the number of websites that a child browsed
the average number of pages a child visited each day during the week
the number of pages that a child visited daily
the top ten sites a child visited
When a parent logs into the Parent Portal Dashboard, it takes them to the landing page. This shows a summary of the most recent student internet activity. It includes sites, dates, and times. Parents can interact with the sites by clicking on them to see exactly what their child viewed. If you have more than one child in the District, you can easily toggle between them in a dropdown at the top of the screen.
Parents can also pause web browsing on their child's device. This will temporarily block website browsing when their child is not at school. Important: This only acts to disable browsing when the child is away from school.

STAAR Online
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is transitioning all state assessments to be administered online by the 2022–2023 school year. To support this change, GCISD will be administering all state assessments online this Spring and is encouraging students to visit the practice tests site released by the TEA to prepare for online testing. For upcoming testing, students will be using district-issued personal devices.
The online practice tests familiarize students with the general tools, designated supports, and accessibility features that may appear in online tests. In the practice site, there are features that may be turned on and off for students with identified accommodations such as text-to-speech and spelling assistance. Organized by grade level and subject, all 2018, 2019, and 2021 STAAR released tests are also available on the online practice site. Please visit this link for instructions on how to access the practice site.
To view upcoming online STAAR testing windows and dates, please visit our website.
More specific information about student testing days will be coming soon. Please submit a help desk ticket if you are having trouble launching a test.
Hey 6th grade parents!
We are on the fast track towards Spring Break and before you know it summer will be here! Please remember your student will need the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines before starting 7th grade. These are often given during 11 and 12 year old well visits. Turning your student's immunization records into the nurse now gets this off your list of "to dos" for summer and makes for an easier registration process! You can view and print your child's vaccine records on file with GCISD by logging in to your Skyward Family Access account. Pick your student's name and then click "Health Info" on the bottom of the left column. Then click "display options" at the top. A box will pop up and click "Show Vaccinations". You can take this record to CVS, Walgreens, CareNow, or any facility or pharmacy who offers vaccinations should you not have a primary care doctor.
