The Research Process
Inquiry and the Library
preparing for research
In the initial stages of a unit, students share background knowledge about a topic. As we prepare for the unit, students identify what they already know and share ideas about potential inquiry aspects. In the library we can:
- pose questions that require inquiry
- share ideas about useful resources
- share background knowledge
- make predictions
accessing resources
At this point, students are engaged in research through a variety of resources. They ask questions and gather information. We read texts and record the information using graphic organizers. In the library we can:
- locate information
- select appropriate resources
- record information
- practice proper citation
processing resources
sorting information
Support students in selecting the most effective resources.
going further
Support students in refining questions and extending research.
drawing conclusions
Guide students in synthesizing research and forming conclusions.
transferring learning
Students present their research findings in a variety of ways.
In the library we can:
-practice oral presentation skills
-peer assessment
- present to an audience
- share findings
