STAGE 2 AND 3 CAMP TO CANBERRA
Stage 2 and Stage 3 had a wonderful trip to Canberra during Week 6. There were some long days and both students and teachers were very tired on their return to Berala.
It was a packed program of events over the 3 days. All students visited: Parliament House, Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, Questacon, CSIRO, Sports Space at the AIS, the War Memorial, The Royal Mint and saw many of the Embassies of different countries on our drive around Canberra. The variety of activities focused on Australia's history, culture, heritage and democracy.
Both new and old Parliament House gave everyone an insight into how things have changed in each of the buildings and why the new Parliament House was needed. Many of the students were fascinated at the Mint to see how our money (coins only) are made and what happens to our coins. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take any samples home with us.
Students were able to release a lot of energy at the AIS, trying their hand at many different Olympic sports. Their creativity was tested by many of the activities at Questacon.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Austrlaians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $20.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
It was a great way to end the year and a big thank you to Ms Garde, Mrs Saleh, Mr Nair, Ms Calleja, Ms Tran, Mr Sandwell, Mr Rogers and Jodie for accompanying the students.
2018 SCHOOL SPECTACULAR
What a fabulous experience for our 12 students who performed at the 2018 School Spectacular. Performing in front of a large audience at Qudos Bank Arena can be quite daunting but when you are one of 5 500 students it becomes a little easier. After a lot of hard work, dedication and multiple rehearsals it all came together.
Our Berala students did themselves, their parents and the school proud on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 November.
A big thank you to Mr Harkness, Mrs Brown, Ms Lykoudis and Mrs Vragalis on their hard work preparing the students.
Well done also to Mr and Mrs Haywood who have been involved in the Spectacular for many years and look after the Aboriginal Dancers at the performances.
There are some very talented students in Government schools from around NSW.
YEAR 6 FAREWELL
What a great night our Year 6 students had at their farewell! All dressed up and ready to dance and celebrate with their friends. After 7 years at primary school this was one of the last things they would be doing as a grade and everyone performed exceptionally.
Parents should be very proud of their children and their achievements not only over this past year but throughout their primary school years. Many of our students have been with us since kindergarten and we have seen them grow and change and ready to tackle the next phase of their schooling.
FILM CLUB
On Friday 23rd November, The Film Club students including students from Stage 1 Honeybees were able to showcase their work they have been doing throughout the year. There were 18 students altogether that were selected to present for some Education Department Directors from Head Office.
Accompanied by Miss Hudson, students began by rehearsing their script. The script was about two spy’s trying to exchange a secret package. Students worked collaboratively in small groups and allocated roles to each other (Camera ‘man’, Character A, B & C, director and sound person). Some students were also taught how to use a DSLR Video camera and were able to film their peers when they performed their part of the script.
While the students were a little bit nervous, they were very excited to have presented in front of Mrs Mandel, Ms Aquilina and the Department's visitors. Soon after our visitors exited, students were able to watch their fellow peers performing their scripts.
MINI FILM FESTIVAL
Berala’s Mini film festival was a hit! Students who created a film, in Film Club, spent the day feeling like movie stars, while the rest of the school enjoyed eating popcorn and watching the show.
Congratulations to all involved on a great school activity.
