A little levity for your day...
Just think if we gave qualitative assessments to our children regarding their work, and they tried comparing their assessments with one another?
(As written by Mark Hays, Academic Director at CC Multimedia)
Jack: I got a "well done" on my paper. What did you get?
Jill: I got a "well done" too.
Jack: Oh yeah, what was your feedback?
Jill: My dad told me, right here, that my transition from the second to third paragraph showed that I understood my topic. He said that the way I had organized that particular sentence really helped him follow my train of thought. What was your assessment?
Jack: My mom wrote that she really liked this particular sentence. She said that my parallelism was clever and it helped her to understand how this particular proof showed strong support for my thesis.
Jill: Well, what did your mom say you did wrong?
Jack: She didn't really say I did anything "wrong." But she did ask me a question right here for me to think about regarding my thesis. She asked me how I thought I could narrow it down a little so that I am not trying to prove so many things in one essay. What did your dad say you did wrong?
Jill: Mine is kinda like yours. He didn't use the word "wrong." He asked me a question, too. Right here, in the third paragraph, he asked, "Do you think you might have responded the same way Edmund did in the story? Was the right decision as easy as you make it sound? Can you think of a circumstance where you were confronted with a similar temptation?"
Jack: Wow. He's tough.
Jill: Yeah, tell me about it. Now those questions are going to roll around in my head for years. They'll probably keep popping up even when I'm not trying to remember them.
Jack: Yeah. You're probably right. My mom said she wants to go over my thesis with me before I start my next essay. She thinks I might be able to ask myself better questions so that it isn't so broad.
Jill: Wow. She's tough.
Jack: Yeah, tell me about it.
Jill: So who did better on their essay: you or me?
