Message from Mr. Ohnstad

Dear Phoenix Families:

Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for today, Thursday, March 2 from 4:00-7:00 pm. and Friday, March 3 from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. We will also have conferences on Tuesday, March 7 from 4:00-7:00 pm. Thank you for joining us either in person or by phone. Our classroom teachers appreciate how involved you are in your child's educational experience.

The Grand Forks City Council is considering approval of a traffic study for the Phoenix Elementary school boundary to be completed in late summer. The study will include video and drone footage of Phoenix school pick up and drop off traffic counts to determine volume and speed of the area. More information will be sent out to area residents about the survey.

Reminder that we will have Spring Break the week of the March 13th through the 17th. This will be a much needed break for our students and staff to prepare for the rest of the school year. I hope all families enjoy this break.

Thank you,

Kevin Ohnstad, Principal

Kindergarten Registration

Families,

Welcome! We are excited for your student to enroll in Grand Forks Public Schools.

If your student is five years old before August 1st, 2023, you will pre-register your student now.

We are excited to see you on April 13, 2023 as we prepare for your student’s kindergarten year. To help better prepare for your arrival at Kindergarten Registration, we would like you to take a few minutes to complete our online Pre-Registration form

(form.jotform.com/gfschools/KRegistration2023). This will allow us to capture information to begin your student’s enrollment and cut down on your waiting time at school that day.

The items listed in the checklist (located in the right column) will be helpful for you to have access to when completing on-site registration this spring.

Additionally, please bring parent/guardian photo identification and a State-Certified Birth Certificate/I9, which is used to verify identification and date of birth.

Please contact us if you need additional information to complete your student’s registration.

We look forward to welcoming your student to Grand Forks Public Schools!

Brenda Lewis, Ph.D., Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education

Parents Lead

Tips for Being a Good Listener.
As a parent/guardian, sometimes you may feel as though your child does not listen to you. It is important that you communicate your needs and feelings to your child in an effective way. A simple suggestion to improve communication between you and your child is to use “I” messages rather than “You” messages (which often create an oppositional situation). For example, instead of saying, “You always leave your dirty dishes on the table. Can’t you pick up after yourself?” say, “When you leave your dishes on the table, I get frustrated because it makes extra work for me when I get home and I’m trying to make dinner.”
