Scientists and Doctors

In the Victorian era

The Victorian era was a time from 1837 to 1901 when Queen Victoria , hence the name, ruled. It was a rapid time for scientific discoveries in England. Even the word scientists was invented then! Discoveries in science such as physics, astronomy, natural history and medicine help our today. The men who discovered parts of the science are truly extraordinary. Like paleontologist Richard Owen, who discovered dinosaurs.

But more importantly, men like John Snow, Louis Pasteur, and Joseph Lister helped piece together the germ theory of disease. These men we're chemists, physicians, and surgeons, kind of like Dr. Jekyll. These men, like Dr. Jekyll, wanted to help, society see and learn more. These men also helped Robert Louis Stevenson, the author of Jekyll and Hyde, create a realistic Dr. Jekyll. These scientists didn't just create amazing discoveries but helped make an amazing book come alive.

Connection to present day

Today health is very important compared to the 1800s. But people like Joseph Lister helped I force sanitary precautions. He instructed that hospitals wear gloves, and wash hands, instruments, and dressings with a phenol solution. This was like that times hand sanitizer and now it's used in house hold cleaners. lister later invented a machine to spray this during operations, like soap or cleaner dispensers.

These doctors and scientist helped health care today. The influenced the importance of being clean around the sick. They decreased the a out of disease in that time. They helped stop people in poverty from getting disease and being unhealthy. The helped people realize that the streets needed to be cleaned and the needed to have a clean up crew. Without the discovery of disease we wouldn't have created sewers and garbage trucks to keep our city's clean.

Five Fun Facts

1. Electromagnetic waves were discovered and helped the creation of the first radio waves.

2. Astronomers found the planet Neptune by only calculations.

3. Paleontology was a new science in which new comers helped discover dinosaurs.

4. Probably the best discovery of this time was the germ theory of disease.

5. Science for the first time was seen as a profession and as a result the term scientists was created.

1850 - 1890'was the golden age of bacteriology. It was a time when the greatest discoveries of the Victorian era were proposed. The discovery of the Germ Theory of Disease helped doctors and scientists become more aware of microorganism, especially diseases. Scientist such as Loius Pasteur, Robert Koch, and Girslamo Fracastoro helped with the discovery of bacteria. All of these discoveries will help make way for cures for Cancer, Ebola, the Zika Virus and much more.
