SMILE MILE
Dear Parents,
We are reaching out to you with an opportunity in the community for a running race called Smile Mile. Smile Mile is a one mile race for children between the ages of five and eleven. For the past several years, Orlando Science Elementary School -Technology Campus, has won the Sly Johnson Award, “Largest Team Award.” It is my hope that we will be able to win the Sly Johnson Award again this year. If successful, OSES PE Department will receive a $500.00 grant to use for PE Equipment from Track Shack to aid in the enrichment of your son or daughter.
If having the largest team is not enough, your son and/or daughter will also have the ability to compete for the win in their age bracket, or just to have fun and be outdoors with their peers. It’s a win, win, win. We cannot do it without you! I hope that everyone signs up!!
All runners will receive a bib, t-shirt and a finisher medal. Dates and times for the race are listed below. Please feel free to email Mr Senter at matt.senter@orlandoscience.org if you have any questions about the race.

OSES LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
Leadership Academy is a tradition at Orlando Science Technology Campus that helps prepare our students for upcoming state testing. Beginning the end of January, students in 3rd-6th grade are invited to attend where he/she will receive additional support for the upcoming FSA. On each of the designated sessions, students will get more in-depth instruction with the standards they are struggling with and take several practice tests/quizzes in preparation for the FSA.
This year for Leadership Academy students will have two options for students to attend:
Tuesday & Thursday OR Saturday.
Students will not be able to attend both sessions.
Hours for the Tuesday & Thursday session are 4:00 pm-6:00 pm. Snacks will be provided. Students MUST be picked up by 6:00 pm. To sign up for the Tuesday and Thursday Leadership Academy sessions, go to this link.
Hours for the Saturday session are 9:00 am-12:00 pm. A lunch and snacks are provided. Students MUST be picked up by 12:00 pm. To sign up for the Saturday Leadership Academy sessions, go to this link.

THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
This week in science we learned about sound energy. Students had a blast learning about how sound is made and enjoying lots of hands-on learning experiences where they got to make sound.
In social studies we continued learning about timelines and comparing the past and present.
This week we had our in-house field trip with the Sanford Zoo where our students got to meet and learn about different animals.
Some reminders: Cooler weather is here. Please make sure your child’s name is written inside of their jacket. We have lots of lost jackets this time of year and without your child’s name we are unable to identify which jacket is theirs. Please make sure your child’s water bottle is also labeled with their name.
FIRST
First graders are learning about plant parts and their functions. We are also enjoying learning about American Symbols and important African Americans.
Please look for information from your child’s teacher about Valentine’s Day celebrations next week.

This week in Ms. Nickerson’s class, students are learning about Earth systems and weather. This week, student’s loved building their own anemometers to measure the wind’s speed.
Second grade students are also participating in an iReady challenge this month, where each student is challenged to complete 10 iReady lessons each week with a passing score of at least 80%.

This week in ELA Ms. Finsterle’s students spun a choice wheel and made projects on topics related to Black History Month. Some of standouts included a timeline of important events in African American history from 1800-2000, posters about Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglas, and Harriet Tubman, and an essay about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. Students in some classes also read Harlem Renaissance poetry by Langston Hughes and Paul Laurence Dunbar.
Sixth graders in the service learning club sold candy grams for Valentine’s Day. They made over $100!
SPECIALS
Students shown below have been working on soccer this week. Students are working on shielding the ball from a defender, passing through rainbow cones with a partner, and working on two touch passing.
This week in Art we are inspired by Valentine’s Day and are looking at a few different street artists such as Chris Uphues and J. Goldcrown who are both known for their heart-themed art.
This week in Character Education we started discussing communication and using whole body listening. We participated in a few different activities to demonstrate our listening skills and talked about how it is important to use both empathy and respect, our character trait of the month to show people we are listening to them.
In STEM Lab, we used strips of paper to complete a Valentine’s Day STEM challenge. We created free-standing structures made from hearts.
