Thornhill Elementary PFC Newsletter

Volume 26, Issue 33, April 23, 2019

From the Principal

Dear Thornhill families,

I hope you are well and enjoying this spring weather. As you know, our students in grades 3-5 will begin SBAC testing next week. Please make sure everyone gets to bed early and has breakfast. Not just for testing but every day!

And I look forward to seeing everyone at the Spring Carnival on Saturday!

Have a great week,

Mr. Daubenspeck

We need everyone’s help to make the Spring Carnival a success. It is expected that all parents sign up for at least one shift (1 hour) at the Spring Carnival this Saturday, April 27.

- You can sign up with your child's Class Booth Coordinator to work a shift.

- You can sign up on the SignUpGenius for other Carnival shifts such as set-up, clean-up, ticket sales, and Dads Club BBQ. We are in needs of lots of help in all of these areas.

Parents are all asked to bring a dessert item for the Cake Walk.

Middle & High school students can volunteer too! We will also need help on Friday, April 26th to set up!!!

*** New *** this year at the Spring Carnival:

  • We have a massage therapist who will be providing chair massages!!!! Early arrival suggested to reserve your spot!

  • Earn Extra Tickets!!!! Sign up for your class booth and/or on the SignUpGenius to receive a FREE ticket at the Spring Carnival!!! 1 hour = 1 ticket.

MUST be signed up, with name on the list, by Thursday night to receive FREE Tickets. No late submissions will be accepted for this offer. Please see Spring Carnival Chair, Marya, for tickets. Tickets can be used for games, food and massages!

Thank you!

Lost & Found

All of our Lost & Found items will be donated after the Spring Carnival this Saturday, April 27.

They will be displayed at the Carnival, so please spend just five minutes looking over the pile -- there’s a really good chance that something is yours! At the end of the day, we’ll sweep them all away and start with empty racks on Monday.

Book Donations

We are once again collecting book donations! These books will be donated to Prescott Elementary on May 4. Did you know that Prescott is turning 150 this year? They are the oldest, continually operating public elementary school in Oakland. To help celebrate this milestone, support our Oakland community, and spread the joy of reading, please donate your gently used elementary-appropriate books. Look for collection boxes in the library and in the office soon, or visit the PFC table at the Carnival on April 27. Interested in helping with the book drive or getting involved with the Prescott Elementary 150th Anniversary celebration on May 4? Contact Becky Urbano at

Thornhill’s Incredible Read-A-Thon

We have collectively read more than 204,000 minutes and raised over $23,000! Together we exceeded expectations and came together as a community with over 73% of Thornhill students participating.

Timed reading sessions ended last Friday, April 19, but you can still collect sponsors until Wednesday, April 24.

Our current standings are:

  • Class with most participation: Ms. Van Ostrand at 100%!
  • Class with most funds raised: Ms. Holman with over $3400
  • Class with most minutes read: Ms. Gustafson with over 27,000 minutes

Teachers have performed their promised challenges! Ms. Novak walked on her hands, Ms. Gustafson had a pie thrown in her face, and Ms. Fox had an ice bucket dumped on her head. Mr. Daubenspeck will dye his hair for exceeding our $22,000 stretch goal!

Sign up to help with our reward parties here.

Thanks to all of our teachers and staff for their amazing support - and to all of the readers and their families for their commitment to reading!

Thank You Read-A-Thon Sponsors

The Read-A-Thon is a big effort with lots of volunteer and staff hours, all dedicated to promoting literacy and reinforce the love of reading with our kids, and raising important funds for our school library. Thanks to these generous sponsors for donating treats to help encourage our little readers!

  • Homeroom for the mac & cheese lunch party for the class with the most participation
  • Flavor Brigade for Italian ice party for 60 kids across the school
  • Sabor Mexicano, Cancun for buckets of chips and salsa for the Pictures & Pajamas with Matt Heroux and Wednesday Kirwan
  • Lucky's Montclair for a whole bunch of refreshments for the Pictures & Pajamas with Matt Heroux and Wednesday Kirwan
  • Safeway on College Ave for the donuts at the Coffee Talk with Judd Winick
  • Starbucks in Montclair for the coffee at the Coffee Talk with Judd Winick
  • Mrs. Dalloways on College Ave for donating back 20 percent of the book sales from the Coffee Talk with Judd Winick

Go Thunderbirds!

Traffic Safety Reminders

Hi Thunderbird families,

Morning drop-off has been a little chaotic the last few weeks. Please everyone, remember these few rules!

1) No U-turns in front of school. Ever!

2) Please be respectful of our Thornhill neighbors and do not park in the driveway of the apartments across the street. Also, no U-turns in their driveway.

3) Pull all the way forward in the drop-off zone. It's amazing how quickly traffic backs up on Thornhill when just one car blocks the drop-zone entrance.

4) Please don't park or drop off in the red/blue zones near the front gate, and especially don't pull up onto the sidewalk to park! It's dangerous for pedestrians in front of school, and blocks cars that actually need to park in the handicapped zone. Either use the drop-off lane or park in the St. John's parking lot.

Thanks for keeping our school and neighborhood safe for everyone!
