The AISB Times
May 17th, 2022

Dear AISB Community Members,
As we wind down the year, I would like to take this opportunity to wish our grade 12 students a fond farewell prom, graduation ceremony and success as they move on to new academic opportunities in college. I would also like to acknowledge staff who will be leaving AISB at the end of the school year. I wish you the best of luck and thank you for the lasting impact you’ve had on the staff and students at AISB.
Best wishes to all students and families who will be moving away from Brazzaville and leaving our school community. As we prepare for the next school year, we are excited to welcome our incoming teachers. In addition to our returning staff, there will also be new faces on staff next year. Our hope is that we can get back to the level of normalcy that will allow us to thrive together in 2022-2023.
Parents, I want to thank you specially for bringing your children to our school and trusting us with their fate. All of you did have other options, yet you picked this team to help you with the most important responsibility you have which is to raise a child. So we appreciate your trust in us.
Staff : This is not just for our classroom teachers that have taught these students, but it is about the collective effort of ALL of you. Everyone, from the kitchen, clinic, reception, to assistants and volunteers in the school believe in always doing what is best for the students.
Teachers: I like to take it upon myself to thank our wonderful teachers and their assistants again. Without question, teachers shape the minds of our children and, thus, their futures. It is nearly impossible to capture the gratitude they deserve.
Hopefully, we will all get the opportunity to spend quality time together during the up-coming events marking the end of the year.

Vania Gulston has taught in the areas of social studies and STEM for almost 20 years. She is interested in creating dynamic educational spaces via broadcast media and within brick and mortar classrooms. She has been involved in public media and education since the 1990s.
Her journey in education started after she had an epiphany one day while riding her bicycle through New York City after deciding to leave college after a year. She loved the projects she was involved in as a volunteer radio producer, but she was not earning a living from it. It was the power that access to the radio waves provided her to open people’s horizons about their world and help them to interact more respectfully with others around them that excited her about her work in public media. At some point during that bike ride, she realized that she would be able to have a comparable effect as a social studies teacher. With that thought, she re-enrolled with enthusiasm in college, subsequently earning a BA with honors in history and folklore and a masters in education in 2004. She has been teaching in public and private school classrooms ever since.
She is currently an online graduate student at New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering’s Integrated Design and Media Program. She also founded WJYN Radio, a low power FM radio station in Philadelphia Before that, she was involved in several public radio stations as a producer and a member of their management teams.
Her involvement in media projects over the years has made her aware of the obstacles that exist for women to learn technology. She has experienced being actively blocked from learning important media tech skills while seeking them out as a volunteer with a community radio station. Because of that and other experiences, she is passionate about opening up the world of Science, Technology, Engineering, Technology & Maths (STEM) to students from social groups that have historically been underrepresented in it as innovators and pioneers..
She is very excited about continuing her work in the field of education with the students at the American International School of Brazzaville.

One main reason for me to become a teacher is to impact the education system. I believe that teachers have the potential to interact with students at all stages of development and from all walks of life. As a teacher, I have the opportunity to help students along this path and to play a part in shaping the person they will ultimately become. I am always glad to help children who struggle with low self-esteem, encouraging and pushing them to realize their potential. Becoming a teacher lets me impart life lessons my students will never forget and puts me in a position to influence their decisions, behaviors, strengths, weaknesses and imagination. Becoming a teacher lets me take part in shaping the next generation.
