March 2017 Newsletter
Term end 3/31! Grades will be posted to Aspen on 4/7!
English-
Our research papers and presentations are done! The kids worked very hard on this project! All the grades are in Aspen and, hopefully, you got to see their rubrics and paper.
We will be starting an “oldy but goody”, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. So, it will be time to travel down the Mississippi River and see what kind of trouble Tom can find.
Keep checking Google Classroom for upcoming homework and important dates. Also, the Tom Sawyer packet will be posted there just in case it may have been forgotten at school when it comes time to do homework!
The students will be taking the ELA MCAS 2.0 will be on
April 10th and 11th!
Math-
During the last week of March, we finished a section that included a lot of topics that didn’t necessarily relate to each other. The section included angles, conversions, inequalities, and average rate of change on a graph. Most students struggle with the 3rd term in math, and you may have seen a little drop in their grades.
Mrs. Perrault will be available after school on Tuesdays & Wednesdays and during Powerblock on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. My softball schedule will make after school help a little difficult, but I’ll let the students know each week when help is available.
We have a few more sections of Geometry left to finish off the year. A lot of students who struggle with the previous sections tend to enjoy the visual form of math that Geometry offers.
We will be taking PARCC on May 9 & 10.
Reading-
Poetry! Yeah! We will begin to discuss and identify poetic elements. Students will be having periodic quizzes to assess understanding of the elements. We will also tap into our creative sides and write an original poem. I am usually faced with grumblings, but they are young poets with great ideas. We will look at a few different poems from Langston Hughes. Students will continue to work on their writing skills as they compare and contrast a few different poems.
Please encourage your child to read as often as possible. An interesting read will allow them to practice their active reading strategies. I only have a few more months to convert the “reluctant readers” into “book enthusiasts”! Also, students should track their reading time and remember to update the reading logs on Mondays in PB.
