It is hard to believe that the first quarter of the school year is over and Thanksgiving is right around the corner. November brings many opportunities to visit CCES. Please take time to visit CCES during American Education Week. More information is in this newsletter to help you plan your visit.

Additionally, please feel free to join CCES Administration for Coffee and Conversation on Tuesday, November 14 at 9:30 a.m. in the cafeteria. This is a great time to talk to
Mr. Cosentino and Mrs. Yankle about what is going on at Clemens Crossing.
Please RSVP with Mrs. Barnhouse at If you have any specific topics you would like to discuss, please indicate that when you RSVP.

Finally, we encourage you to schedule time to meet with your child's teacher.
Parent-Teacher Conferences provide a great way to connect, collaborate, and plan for future success and growth of your child in school.

Staff Spotlight - Mrs. McKim, 2nd Grade Teacher

Mrs. Kelly McKim, a Second-Grade Teacher, is our Staff Spotlight this week.
Mrs. McKim is in her thirteenth year as a teacher in the Howard County Public School System. She started her career at neighboring schools in Columbia: Bryant Woods and Running Brook Elementary Schools. Although Mrs. McKim has been teaching here at Clemens Crossing Elementary for six years, this is not her first time period at CCES.
She attended Clemens Crossing Elementary as a student from kindergarten through fifth grade.

After graduating from Atholton High School, she attended Towson University and later Loyola University in Maryland. She lives in Carroll County with her husband and son, Connor. In her spare time, she enjoys making jewelry, cake decorating, creating floral arrangements, and working part-time for Lularoe.

Mrs. McKim is thrilled to come back and serve the school that was such an important part of her childhood.

American Education Week

During American Education Week, November 13—17, 2017, Americans nationwide will join the National Education Association (NEA) in raising awareness about the need to provide every child with a quality public education. The celebration highlights the importance of bringing together educators, parents, students, and communities in a unified effort to build great public schools. It also reflects NEA's vision of calling upon America to provide public school students with quality schools so that they can grow and achieve in the 21st century. As part of the celebration, we provide parents and guardians the opportunity to visit their child’s classroom during the week. Feel free to visit your child's classroom any day during the week. Please refer to the CCES Master Schedule below to help you guide your visitation.

When you visit, please be prepared to sign-in through the Lobby Guard kiosk in the office. You will need your driver's license to sign-in with Lobby Guard. As a reminder, we do not allow younger children in the classrooms when parents visit. Additionally, we ask for visitors to refrain from using their phones in the classroom. Please put your phone on silence or vibrate. If you need to use your phone or device for any reason, please go to the front lobby or outside the building.

We look forward to our continued partnership in your child's education, and we are excited to see you in school during American Education Week.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Fall Conferences

Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for November 20, 21, and 22. Conferences will be with Homeroom Teachers. In order to schedule conferences, you will need to login to HCPSS Connect. HCPSS Connect is currently open for conference scheduling. T
he program will be open until Friday, November 17 at 4:00 p.m.
The directions for parent conference registration linked here from the HCPSS website.
If you have any questions, please call the front office at 410-313-6866.

Please take time to schedule your Parent-Teacher Conference. It is often difficult to coordinate last-minute additions to teacher's schedules after the scheduling window closes.

Please note: This is the only conference period for the school year. There was no conference window built into the schedule for February or March.

Math Conferences

If you are in need of a math conference, please schedule a time with your child's math teacher at any time during the school year.

We Serve Breakfast Too!

CogAT Testing for Grades 3 and 5

The CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) is a reasoning and problem-solving test used by schools to help identify students for gifted and talented programs. The test is published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and is comprised of a verbal battery, quantitative battery, and nonverbal battery. Each battery consists of three different subtests that require a focus on specific areas of cognition.
Clemens Crossing will administer CogAT for Third Grade on December 5, 6, and 11 at
9:20 a.m. Students in Fifth Grade will take the CogAT on December 5, 6, and 8 at 10:45a.m. Results will be available in February. If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Yankle.

Early Dismissal Reminder

Due to the busy nature of dismissal, we request early dismissal pickups take place
3:15 p.m.

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

As the weather begins to change and become cooler, it is important to review arrival and dismissal procedures.

If you are in a non-transportation zone (walker or car rider), it is extremely important to familiarize yourself with our routines for arrival and dismissal.

As adults, we must follow predictable patterns and routines because children can be unpredictable. Parking in a wrong or illegal place creates unpredictable situations, and those types of situations can put students at risk during arrival and dismissal.

Arrival and dismissal safety is everyone's responsibility. Please review the map below and listen to our staff members who are outside to assist your children when they enter and leave school daily.

Please note: Do not park along Quarterstaff Road where signs state "No Parking or Standing". Howard County Police will ticket drivers who park or drop-off/pick-up students where "No Parking" signs are posted.

Holiday Shoppe

The CCES PTA Holiday Shoppe is returning this year on December 7th, 8th, and 11th from 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. in the CCES Library. The Holiday Shoppe provides kids with the opportunity to purchase gifts for their family and friends, (while their parents/guardians wait in the hall), that cost between $0.25 and $12. Please note that the gifts are not specific to the holidays and can be given for any occasion like birthdays. To make this a successful event, we are in need of parent and middle/high school volunteers who can assist the shoppers with their purchases and help wrap their gifts. Student volunteers are eligible for community service hours. If you are interested in volunteering and for more information, please visit the following link: Also, if you have spare wrapping or tissue paper that you no longer have a use for, please consider donating it to the Holiday Shoppe so our kids can spruce up their wrapping. If you have questions or suggestions, please contact Katy Petty at Thanks in advance!

Vendors for Holiday Shoppe

CCES Parents! Do you have a business where you sell items -- Art Work? Jewelry? Clothing? Kitchen supplies? Would you be interested in selling your items to CCES families for the Holidays? Your PTA has an opportunity for you!

The CCES PTA is sponsoring a Holiday Shoppe on December 7th, 8th, and 11th, 2017, in the Media Center from 4:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. each night. This is for students to purchase gifts for their families. While the students are shopping for small, kid-friendly trinkets (like mugs, stickers, bouncy balls, etc.) the PTA is offering parents the chance to shop also, at a Vendor Showcase in the First Grade and Third Grade Pods during the Holiday Shoppe hours. All vendors must sell family friendly items/goods, but they cannot be similar in nature to what is sold in the Holiday Shoppe.

The PTA has 3-4 vendor slots remaining depending on the night (the PTA gave CCES Staff initial priority). If you are interested in participating, please email Katy Petty at for the Vendor Agreement. The vendor agreement needs to be returned by November 17, 2017. Further details, including order of approval, is detailed in the Vendor Agreement.

School Play

Come join us for CCES's Annual Musical Production! This year, students will be performing Disney's Beauty and The Beast Jr! The performances will be on Thursday, November 16th at 7:30 p.m. and on Friday, November 17th at 7:30 p.m.

The students have worked really hard and look forward to putting on amazing performances! They would love to have the support of the school and community!!
We hope to see you there!

Please read the following information so that you understand the ticketing/seating process:

When parents and guests arrive they should form a single file line in the order that they arrive along the wall. We ask that you do not allow friends or family members to move ahead of others to join other family members or friends. Prior to the show, a PTA representative will issue tickets to the people in line (there will be a seating map for each person to select the seats they want.) Children in line will be issued one ticket and adults can be issued a maximum of three tickets (including their own.) If your family requires additional tickets, then you will need additional adults wait in line to receive them. You may not be able to sit together if you have a large group attending. Once a person receives a ticket with a seat number, then only that person is entitled to sit in that specific seat. Unclaimed seats will be treated as "open seats" and can be taken on a first come- first serve basis. If you have any questions about whether a seat is reserved, please check with a PTA representative. Please pass along this information to family and friends who plan to attend the performances.

If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Molinari at
