Leadership Message
It Takes a Village…
We are all familiar with the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child” and have experienced those moments on our journeys when this comes to light. Every day at our school we see so many examples of our village; parents picking up other children, dropping off lunches to someone else’s baby because the morning got away from them, our community responding when someone is in need, students who refer to “Baba” not because of a family of origin but a family of familiarity and invitation...We have the blessing every day of parents placing their trust in us to walk with their children during the day and we are so grateful for this. One little one this week was having some difficulty separating from Mom and Mr. Marshall took her by the hand and walked her to class, while I gave the reassuring, “We’ve got her” to her Mama. The relief was evident on Mom’s face as she entrusted us with her most precious gift. Through the celebrations, challenges, and even, suffering, we are grateful that a village surrounds our children and we know we are not alone.
During the recent Humboldt tragedy we have witnessed the profound encircling of love for other people’s children. Our world responded with love, support, and prayers and our JV village sent our piece of the patchwork quilt of love. Things may not make sense and the whys can be difficult to answer, however, as we have reassured our students this week, God is there. We see His presence in every kindness, every prayer, every act of Mercy and love that surrounds those in need. This week students responded with compassion and love, even connecting other world tragedies that need our prayers. This gift of empathy is what will continue to make our world a beautiful place to be, and someday, our children today will become the “village”.
Gracious God, you teach us to love one another through your works of mercy. Mercy is reaching out to others with compassion. Open our hearts to recognize moments where we can feed, clothe, comfort, visit, and listen to those in need. Thank-you for your son, Jesus, who showed us that love really makes a difference. Help us continue to be your disciples of Love in our village. Amen.

Gearing up for Year 3 of the One-to-One Technology Program
With the successful implementation of the One to One technology program, EICS is excited to enter into year 3 of the initiative.
Beginning in September of 2018-2019, the option to purchase or lease to own a Chromebook will be offered by Staples and not directly from the school.
Because of the positive feedback we’ve received from you about the service and support provided by Staples, we continue to recommend them to our parent community.
Here is a link to their most recent offer, which now includes payment options.
We will continue to maintain a small inventory of Chromebooks at the school in the event that the student forgets to bring or charge their own device.
Any further questions, please contact your school administration.

Learning through Competencies
We are focusing on using the language and philosophies of learning through the competencies at Jean Vanier. Through competencies, students develop and connect key aspects of knowing, thinking and doing across a variety of learning contexts, both within and outside school. As students develop competencies through learner outcomes, they acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes that contribute to their success as lifelong learners and active citizens.

We are St. Sophia’s Ukrainian Catholic Parish… a community of over 250 members mostly residing in and around Strathcona County. This year is a very exciting time for our Parish as we have made the announcement to start development of a brand new church in Sherwood Park. Over the years we have had many fundraisers to realize this goal and we are now commencing preparations for our 7th Annual Golf Tournament and once again are looking for your support.
The primary focus of the tournament is to have fun and encourage interaction amongst St. Sophia parishioners and friends, while raising much-needed funds for the parish and its goal of building our new church in the community.
The tournament will be held at Broadmoor Golf Course on Saturday, June 9th (see additional information below). Just like last year, there will be the many complimentary food and beverage holes for golfers to enjoy.
There also will be an Early Bird Prize drawn for those golfers that register and pay by Monday, May 7th. The Early Bird Prize is a round of golf including a cart and dinner at the Broadmoor Golf Course – valued at over $400!
Last year we had a full roster for the tournament and registrations are already filling up quickly!
Hope to see you out there!
