Food Lion Math
Shout Out! to the Food Lion on Tarboro St. for recently hosting Math Night for students, staff and parents from Wintead ES. Everyone had a great time solving real world math problems, such as taking measurements in the produce section and writing multiplication facts using arrays found in the store. Principal Claudia Spencer would like to thank Store Manager Sean Mitchell for going above and beyond to make the parents feel welcome by providing cake and giving out gift cards as prizes. It was a great night of parent involvement.
Contest Winners
Congrats to our students who were winners in the North Carolina School Board Association's (NCSBA) poster and video contest! The students were asked to answer the question “What’s Super About Public Schools?” in their artwork and videos. NCSBA received more than 400 entries for the elementary poster contest. We are so proud of our winners in the 3-5 grades category: 2nd place, Emery Rollins from New Hope ES; and 3rd place, Finley Deans from Rock Ridge ES. We also had two students recognized for Honorable Mention - Bowman Smith from Rock Ridge ES and Mirna Chavez from Lucama ES. In the middle school video contest, Springfield MS won third place out of all the entries! Click the link to see their video. NCSBA announced the winners at its annual conference in Greensboro earlier this week. Our winners will be invited to the December Wilson County Board of Education meeting for recognition.
Teacher Tours
Shout Out! to our high school teachers who recently toured 3C Store Fixtures and S.T. Wooten as part of the Wilson Education Partnership (WEP) Career Connections program. The teachers all teach classes centered around career and technical education, and it was a great experience for them to see firsthand some of the job opportunities out there for students. Great coverage (and great quote from WEP Executive Director Robin Williams) in The Wilson Times - “WEP’s mission is to connect the community with the school system, so what we are trying to do with the help of a Merck grant and this Career Connections Program is let our teachers know what is in the community,” said Ms. Williams. “They will know about the business, but more importantly, they will be able to build relationships so that if they are in a class and they encounter a student who is interested in something we have seen, they have a phone number and they can reach out and find out if they are hiring and if they are, what does the student need to do."

More Shout Outs!
- Shout Out! to Wilson Energy for repairing the ropes on the flagpole at Elm City MS this week! Once everything was repaired, they were also able to replace the flag. We appreciate their assistance in keeping our flags flying!
- "I would like to send a Shout Out! to Assistant Principal Rebecca Dixon for the tour of New Hope ES. She took time out of her busy schedule to be my personal tour guide as we visited Exceptional Children's classrooms, the cafeteria and other classrooms. She also introduced me to the custodial staff. I witnessed students who were engaged and working with technology - especially in the Exceptional Children's classes. I was very impressed with what I saw at New Hope. The students were respectful, responsible and ready to learn." - From Board of Education Member Debora Powell
