WLWV Community Update
Nov. 21, 2018
Message from Superintendent Dr. Kathy Ludwig
Dear West Linn-Wilsonville Community,
Thanksgiving is a special seasonal reminder to pause and reflect with a spirit of gratitude.
I am grateful for the West Linn-Wilsonville school community and the opportunity to work alongside a highly talented group of professionals who commit to doing what is best for our students, every single day. I am grateful to our parents and patrons for the countless ways in which you volunteer, contribute, and support the many successes of our students, staff, and school communities. I am grateful to those who go above and beyond, including our incredible PTAs, booster clubs, MAP volunteers and Education Foundation board members. I am grateful for a School Board made up of volunteer community members who lead with integrity, compassion, and a never-ending belief in our students and staff. Most of all I am grateful for our students, who never cease to amaze us with their endless talent, work ethic, empathy, and desire to be the best people they can be to one another…and the world.
Enjoy the colors of fall, the crisp fresh air, the beauty of our landscape, and these days ahead. I wish all of you a joy-filled Thanksgiving holiday with family, friends, and neighbors.
Leading for All…with gratitude,
Kathy Ludwig
Join us for a Future High School Possibilities Community Forum
As our School Board contemplates its Board Goal No. 4, and the possibility of a Capital Bond in the near future, the planning for future high school learning spaces is set to begin. Last year, our superintendent held a year-long High School Study, examining current and future programs and possibilities.
Combined with recent 10-year enrollment projections, and learning space capacity calculations created by the Long Range Planning Committee, the Board has signaled that it's time to begin planning for future high school learning spaces. Two Community Forums will be held in December, inviting community members to learn about possibilities for future high school learning spaces and provide input.
Both Community Forums are exactly the same. Patrons may attend whichever forum is more convenient. Boundary adjustments will NOT be a topic at these forums, as future high school possibilities are not expected to impact existing boundaries.
Dec. 4 — The district will hold the first Future High School Possibilities Community Forum on Dec. 4 starting at 6 p.m. in the Rosemont Ridge Middle School commons.
Dec. 5 — The district will hold the second Future High School Possibilities Community Forums on Dec. 5 starting at 6 p.m. in the Meridian Creek Middle School commons.
Winter is Coming — Time to Update Your FlashAlert Subscriptions
Families should consider getting the free FlashAlert Messenger app from the Apple AppStore or Google PlayStore. Announcements will also be displayed on the local TV channels. During an event, we will also post an announcement on the district homepage.
Weather updates will also be posted on the district's Facebook and Twitter pages in the event of a school closure or delay.
The West Linn-Wilsonville Education Foundation is excited to announce that the box office is now open for the 5th annual "Night with the Portland Trail Blazers" as they take on the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday, January 18th at 7:30 pm.
As in years past, participants will have the opportunity to take part in at least one experience. First, all ticket holders who purchase through the West Linn-Wilsonville Education Foundation link will have the opportunity to go onto the court after the game and shoot a free throw. Second, any tickets purchased for children between the ages of 6 and 13 will be entered into a drawing to participate in the pre-game Courtside Kids experience. For this exciting program, 20 kids will get to high-five the Blazers as they come onto the court and sit in their courtside chairs while the team warms up.
To sign up your child(ren) for the drawing simply send an email to marcouxbeyer63@gmail.com and include:
- Your name
- Names of child(ren) ages 6 - 13
- Your ticket purchase confirmation number
You will find all the details and a link to order on the Education Foundation website.
Or order your tickets now at Rosequarter.com/groupnights using the Promo Code: WLWV. The purchase deadline is December 14th. Don't miss out on this great opportunity!

Music and Arts Partners to Host Wilsonville Winter Festival
Music and Arts Partners will once again host its annual Wilsonville Winter Festival on Saturday, Dec. 15, inviting members of the community to enjoy performances from dozens of Wilsonville High School students and performing arts programs.
The Dec. 15 event will take place from 2-5 p.m. in the Wilsonville High School gymnasium. Cost is $25 per family of four, with an additional $10 per family member. Cost is based on a sliding scale, and all families are invited to attend. Tickets can be purchased at the door; both cash and card are accepted. Spaghetti dinner is included with purchase, including salad, breadsticks, cookies, and a variety of non-alcoholic beverages.
The Festival will be highlighted by performances from Wilsonville High School choir students, Soul’d Out, orchestra, band, and the drama department among others. Student artwork from across the school district will also be on display for viewing.
Learn more about MAP at their website.
Safety Spotlight: Volunteer vs. Visitor
Creating safe and welcoming schools for our students is a top priority in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District. We also strive to create schools that are safe and welcoming for our volunteers and visitors. That means utilizing a check-in process that allows our schools to know who is in the building at all times, prevent unauthorized visitors from entering, and distinguish who is a volunteer and who is a visitor.
Volunteers are approved through our HelpCounter system. Volunteers can work with students in the presence of another WLWV staff member. We also welcome community and parent visitors for school events, but visitors are not approved to work with students.
Interested volunteers can register by visiting the district website. Simply click ‘Start’ to fill out your application, which includes a background check. The first time that volunteers sign-in to volunteer at any WLWV school they will be prompted to accept a Volunteer Agreement. Volunteers must also re-register every three years, or when volunteering at a new school.
Note that volunteer coaches register through a different process. Contact your school’s athletic director or principal for more information.
We are fortunate in our school district to enjoy a tremendous amount of community volunteerism and support. Thank you for your time and effort, and for helping us keep our schools safe.
WLWV Educators Engage in Productive Professional Learning During Thanksgiving Break
Teachers throughout the West Linn-Wilsonville School District spent Monday learning together across a variety of subjects. From reviewing potential science units to mastering restorative practice techniques, teachers spent Nov. 19 honing their craft before they enjoyed Thanksgiving break like their students.
Teachers from all nine WLWV primary schools flocked to Boones Ferry Primary, taking part in co-learning through the lens of writer’s workshop and science. Teachers gathered across schools and grade levels, narrowing their focus on learning progressions through a student’s K-5 experience. Teachers used that focus to create potential reading units that included learning targets and success criteria.
