Starling: Spiral Through
Natural Growth Patterns In Art & Life
New Chambers
It's been over a month since my last episode on symbolic living, and a lot has changed. I have had to resign from my teaching job, because I felt it was unsafe to return to school with the rising virus cases here in Tennessee. This has had me reflecting on where I am, who I am and how I got here. The spiral is a symbol that has shown up a lot for me personally, and I have been connecting it to a lot of aspects of live progress and development. I've looked at art, poetry and music that connects with the spiral theme and taken notice of where the spiral appears throughout our natural universe as well. Listen in and consider whether you feel you have developed more linearly or in a spiral.
Here are some of the old artworks I found as I was cleaning my studio and reorganizing...that got me considering spirals.

Practices Around The Spiral Growth Pattern:
- Take time to go back through your old artwork…sketchbooks and journals. See if you return to themes over time…how have they changed and developed.
- Spend time with spirals. Draw them, look for them in the world around you, consider your own connections with the symbol. How have you grown in your life that might be less like a straight line, and more like a spiral? Take time to contemplate the symbol and see what it offers you.
- Consider natural spiral patterns and how they may inspire you. Think snails, hurricanes, sunflowers, our galaxy, the nautilus…create around that natural theme…with words or images…movements or music and see how the inspiration of that natural form comes through in your creative process.
- The Spiral Jetty is an invitation to walk in a spiral…while most of us can’t travel to the actual great salt lake and walk the spiral…we can move in that way. Perhaps go for a spiral walk…moving counterclockwise, or clockwise if that is what you are feeling. Allowing your body to move in the movement of our galaxy, in that pattern might be like a meditation.
- Starting where you are now…how do you create something to honor where you have been? To honor all that you carry with you and how far you have come. Not as a way of nostalgia or remembrance but as a way to honor your growth and development…as an artist and as a man being.
Bare With Me
I'm a work in progress as we head into fall. I am taking on a new role as Homeschool Mom, beginning to build Starling Art Studios and I want to maintain my own art practice as well. So...I will be making podcast episodes as time allows. Reach out if you have questions, comments and so on...in the meantime...
