THE SKY NEEDS STARS
NUDGE: ROBERTS MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUME 6
Dear Roberts,
I want you to imagine a young kid in the 60's watching the original episodes of Star Trek. This kid has the opportunity to see Captain Kirk pull out the communicator, and flip it open to call the ship to have Scotty beam him up. Keep in mind, cordless phones do not even exist yet! What do you think these vivid sci-fi images do to a kid? It allows a child to have an imagination and nudges them to ask questions of various possibilites. Marin Cooper was one of those kids in the 60's who watched Star Trek. He watched Captain Kirk use his communicator on Star Trek, which inspired him to develop a handheld mobile phone. He created the first portable cellular phone in 1973.
As teachers, we are creating the world as a reflection of what we can imagine. It is also in our capabilities to help shape the world of our students through their imagination. We have to create a classroom with vivid imagery of what students are capable of learning through exploration. It is also important for us to create a learning environment that nudges our students to see past their limitations. It is our job to inspire our students to ask that infamous question, "what if."
How can we do this as a teachers? It is so easy to rely on our raw talents when we teach, but that will not get us statically far. Unless we create a menu of instructional options, we will fall short of our goals. We must create a menu of instructional fundamentals. Master Teachers consistently rely on their menu of go-to-strategies that continually develop and sustain curiosity. To create a classroom that sparks curiosity, we have to be deliberate in our instructional planning. Here are my personal favorite instructional strategies that spark curiosity and engages students:
- Think/Pair/Share
- Sentence Stems
- Randomization
- Check for understanding w/written response
- Small group instruction
The only way to be an expert at these instructional fundamentals, is to be intentional about practicing it over and over. Our PLC and planning time challenges us to collaborate and to be hyper focused on creating an environment that sparks curiosity. Yes, you can do phenomenal things on your own merit and talent, but you can never reach your full potential unless you do it collectively.
