Autrey Mill Lions
March 19, 2018 to March 30, 2018
ATTENTION AMMS FAMILIES:
Autrey Mill Middle School will be electing representatives to serve on the School Governance Council. We will be electing one parent/guardian position and one teacher position for our spring election. Our School Governance Council has a leadership role in the governance of the school. The Council works with the principal in setting the long-term vision and strategy for the school. They are responsible for approving the school's strategic plan and budget recommendations, as well as designing innovative solutions to increase academic achievement and meet the unique needs of our school community.
Elections for the parent/guardian and teacher positions on the School Governance Council will be held March 19th-March 23rd. The following AMMS parents/guardians are running as candidates. All AMMS parents/guardians will be eligible to vote for one parent School Governance Council candidate. Each parent will receive an email with a unique link allowing you to vote in this year’s election. Please make sure the school has your correct email address on file.
Matt Newman- My name is Matt Newman, my family and I moved to Johns Creek in August of 201. My oldest two children both attend AMMS, Brenden is in 7th, Rachel in 6th. A little about me. I’m passionate about being a collaborator and finding a positive result and benefit to the most difficult situations. Just like in corporate America where I have been working the past 25 years, the educational system is no different, you have to maximize the resources given and provide the best experience for your end customer, in this case at AMMS it’s our students. As a profession, I’m responsible for Customer Experience inside the Healthcare Industry. I see the customer experience in business in a similar fashion to parent/student experience. What our students take away with them from their brief three-year experience at AMMS can influence and shape them in so many different ways. Providing the best tools and environment that can be delivered to positively shape those experiences is my charter for this nomination to the council. Whether you are leading, governing, influencing, etc. whoever your fighting for always benefit by you prioritizing choices based on maximizing the returns they will reap from by those decisions. Collaborating with AMMS leadership, teachers, parents, and the community supporting the school is foundational. Doing this while continuing to drive the reputation, results, and student experience delivered at AMMS today is why I’m interested in this role.
Curtis Smith- I am the father of two daughters in the district (7th and 4th grades currently). I worked in the financial market for 20 years as a consultant and banker (BNY Mellon) both in New York and in São Paulo, Brazil. I am currently part of a start-up technology company based in Alpharetta (Worthix). In addition to my professional experience, I served on the Board of Directors of a biofuel producer in Brazil for 4 years, providing managerial and strategic direction for a growing company in a challenging market. I am interested in serving on Autrey Mill's School Governance Council primarily because I am a strong believer in the role of public schools for the development of our children and the contribution they can make to our communities. I was raised in a family in which both of my parents were public school educators, and my brother pursued a career as a public school teacher in Vermont. I moved to the Alpharetta/John's Creek area 1 1/2 years ago because of the outstanding public school environment and the strong economic consolidation of the region. I would enjoy an opportunity to offer my time and effort to support the school my daughters attend (present and future) and contribute to its ongoing success and interaction with other parents and the community as a whole.
AMMS is ROARING for Puerto Rico

Help support the new AMMS Virtual Reality Lab by donating USED iPhones!
Imagine exploring the Eiffel Tower right from your very own desk in French class or experience walking on the moon in your science class. Virtual Reality allows students to explore far off places without ever leaving the classroom.
AMMS Instructional Technology is working to build a Virtual Reality Lab to provide these experiences for all Autrey Mill students. Through your donations, you will be providing our students at AMMS with cutting edge opportunities and preparing our students for the jobs of tomorrow.
The request for Apple iPhone(s) will allow us to build the virtual lab and overcome compatibility restraints. Requesting USED iPhone 6, 6Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, or 7Plus. Apple iOS devices are able to seamlessly work with our system at Autrey MIll. Selecting iPhones offers an optimal experience for students to hone in on the virtual experience through the use of goggles that cannot be accomplished with iPads or laptop devices.
Check out the following website for more information!
Donations may be turned in to the school front office or to Mrs. Andrea Tseng-Rioux in the media center.

Class Updates
Foreign Language
French:
See Ms. Blackburn’s web page for updated information.
Spanish:
Students finished reading Las aventuras de Isabela and now they are learning to talk about their school schedule and classes. This includes telling time and saying when different classes begin and end. They are also talking about what teachers they have for each class and where the classes are held. In addition, they are learning to describe location of classroom items using prepositions of position (above, below, inside, on top of, behind, etc.) Please encourage daily practice using Quizlet. The audio should be turned on for Spanish and off for English. Remind your student to repeat what they hear in Spanish. Thank you for your support from home!
Science:
In science we are continuing our study of astronomy with a focus on the solar system!
On Tuesday, March 20th students will take a quiz covering gravity, geocentric/heliocentric models of the solar system, and small bodies in the solar system (comets, asteroids, meteoroids/meteors/meteorites).
This week students will begin a project about a planet in the solar system and creating a superhero to represent the planet. Stay tuned for more information!
Our astronomy unit test is scheduled for Thursday, March 29th. This unit test will cover everything we have learned so far in astronomy: seasons, the Big Bang, galaxies, gravity, geocentric/heliocentric models of the solar system, and small bodies in the solar system (comets, asteroids, meteoroids/meteors/meteorites), and the solar system. Students will receive their study guide on Wednesday, March 21st and it is due Wednesday, March 28th.
Social Studies:
We will begin next week by wrapping our study of 20th century Cuba. The rest of the week will be spent covering issues in Modern Latin America including: poverty in Latin America, the War on Drugs, and Migration to the US. Students will be working in groups to create presentations on one of these topics. They will have Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in class to work, and will be sharing their presentations on Friday. These projects will count as a quiz grade.
The following week, we will spend Monday reviewing for the test, and Tuesday and Wednesday taking the test over Latin American History. Tuesday will be the short essay portion, and Wednesday will be multiple choice. Activities for Thursday and Friday are up to the discretion of each Social Studies teacher and may include: absolute location practice, map skills practice, and current events.
Mathematics:
60-We will have a test on Tuesday, March 20th over Unit 6, Rational Explorations: Numbers and their opposites. Study guides were handed out Tuesday of this week and are due Monday.
This will include using positive and negative numbers to represent real-world situations (6.NS.5), identifying and placing rational numbers on a number line(6.NS.6), identifying the opposites of integers (6.NS.6a), understanding absolute value (6.NS.6c), ordering rational numbers (fractions and decimals included) (6.NS. 7), graphing ordered pairs on the coordinate plane (6.NS.6b), find distances between points on the coordinate plane, and solve real-world problems by graphing points (6.NS.8). The test will also include writing inequalities to represent real-world problems, representing solutions of inequalities by graphing them on a number line. (MCC6.EE.8)
Then we will begin Unit 7, Statistics.. We will be learning measures of central tendency including mean, median, mode and range (6.SP.3). Then we will be analyzing and creating box plots (6.SP.4). Next, we be finding statistical questions (6.SP. 1) and unit of measurement (attribute, unit of measurement, number of observations, and means of how you got the measurement)(6.SP.5). After that, we will create and analyze dot plots, frequency tables, and histograms(6.SP.4). Then we will find patterns in the data including left and right skew, bell curve, outlier, uniform distribution, clusters, gaps and symmetry (6.SP.2). The assessment will be after GA milestones. After the statistics standards, we will be reviewing the 6th grade standards before the GA Milestones.
6A- After our 3D geometry test on Tuesday, we will begin our statistics/inferences unit. We will be focusing on the rest of the 6th grade standards and coming back to the rest of the 7th grade ones after GA Milestones. We will be learning measures of central tendency including mean, median, mode and range (6.SP.3). Then we will be analyzing and creating box plots (6.SP.4). Next, we be finding statistical questions (6.SP. 1) and unit of measurement (attribute, unit of measurement, number of observations, and means of how your got the measurement)(6.SP.5).
7A/7O- We will be reviewing the types of graphs and creating them. Then we will take two sets of data and compare their data sets to determine the overlap and the measure of variability (7.SP.3). We will also draw inferences from two sets of data (7.SP.4). Our inferences test is scheduled on 3/23. The test will cover biased, unbiased, types of samples(7.SP.1), making predictions from a sample (7.SP.2), comparing graphs, making inferences from graphs and finding the measure of variability.
We will be reviewing the 6th grade standards before the GA Milestones in the coming weeks.
Language Arts:
ELA is continuing our poetry unit! In this unit, we cover standard RL4 at length, including: figurative language, tone and mood, poetic structure, and sound devices. We also read and analyze a wide variety of poems and other forms of literature as we analyze the various standards in context.
