Manitou Springs Middle School
Friday, March 24th, 2023
Dear Middle School Families,
We had a great week of fun and learning at MSMS. One highlight of the week was our staff engaging in Learning Walks. Every teacher had an opportunity to observe colleagues and learn from each other. We strive to create opportunities for staff to grow in order to provide the best education for our students. On behalf of all staff, we wish you a happy, healthy spring break. Enjoy the spirit week pictures below!
Sincerely,
Mr. Cady
Principal, MSMS

3rd-11th Grade Testing
Dear Parents/Guardians,
In April we will administer state testing for our 3rd-11th graders. In grades 3-8 students will take three tests each of Math and English Language Arts, with an additional 3 tests of science for grades 5 and 8. In grades 9-11 students will take the SAT Suite of assessments, with an additional science assessment in grade 11.
We believe that these assessments help to monitor a student's academic growth and support our professional growth as well. If you have any questions about state testing please reach out to our child's school assessment coordinator.

Did you know that scholarships are available for all grade levels? There are scholarships that you can apply for in middle school. Check out this website: Scholarships for Middle School Students
6th Grade Snack Sign-up:
6th graders eat lunch early, at 10:05am, so they tend to be hungry towards the end of the day. PAC is helping organize snacks for the 6th graders so they can focus on their afternoon classes. The big boxes of snacks they sell at Costco or Sam's are perfect. Please consider signing up HERE.

The Art of Appropriation: Fair Use and Why Parody is Protected
Fair use is a legal doctrine in the United States that allows for the limited use of copyrighted materials without the permission of the copyright owner. The purpose of fair use is to balance the exclusive rights of copyright owners with the public's interest in using copyrighted materials for purposes such as criticism, commentary, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.
Here are some tips on fair use:
- Purpose and character of the use: One of the most important factors in determining fair use is the purpose and character of the use. If the use is for nonprofit, educational, or transformative purposes (such as criticism, commentary, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research), it may be more likely to be considered fair use.
- Nature of the copyrighted work: The nature of the copyrighted work is another factor to consider. The more creative and original the work is, the less likely it is to be considered fair use.
- Amount and substantiality of the portion used: The amount and substantiality of the portion used is another factor to consider. Using a small portion of a work is more likely to be considered fair use than using a large portion.
- Effect on the market for the original work: The effect on the market for the original work is the final factor to consider. If the use of the copyrighted material has a negative impact on the market for the original work, it is less likely to be considered fair use.
Remember that these tips are just general guidelines and each case of fair use should be evaluated on its own merits. If you are unsure whether your use of copyrighted material falls under fair use, it's always best to consult with a lawyer or other legal expert.
