Principal's Corner
My name is Kevin Schnicker and I am excited to be here at Waynesville High School and work with the future citizens and leaders of our great nation! I will be sending out a monthly Sophomore newsletter to keep our parents informed of all of the exciting things happening in our building. We are into the 1st six weeks grading period and I would like to encourage all parents to check their children’s’ grades on E-school every week and to communicate with their teachers. All teachers provide academic assistance before and after school. WHS also hosts an after-school program (W.I.N.) daily after school Monday through Thursday and the Academic Student Achievement Program (ASAP) on selected Saturdays each month to provide students with academic assistance. We have had an amazing start to the 2018-19 school year and look forward to supporting the sophomore class in preparing for graduation and their futures. GO TIGERS!!!!!!
Sophomore Academic Highlights
Science Classes
- Biology/Pre-AP Biology classes are continuing their journey through macromolecules. Students will learn about lipids and nucleic acids this week.
- AP Environmental Science classes will be discovering how energy and matter cycle in the ecosystem.
Math Classes
- In geometry, we are giving our first Summative Assessment over Chapter One using the midpoint and distance formulas, properties of line segments and angles, and angle relationships this week on Thursday, September 13. We have received new textbooks and have distributed them to each student. These textbooks are available online and provide interactive learning opportunities for the geometry students. I highly encourage the ASAP program on the scheduled Saturdays from 8-12 for students to get extra help the next two are: September 16 and October 6.
- Algebra 1 is teaching our students how to use our Chromebooks and online resources as a primary means of completing coursework. The accessibility and functionality of the Chromebook vs a computer is a bit different. We are also, for the first time, using a companion workbook that allows students to have a single location for all their coursework notes. With computers and companion books, we are able to have students keep their textbook at home and use the Chromebook as their textbook in class. We completed our pre-knowledge assessments and have moved students who were misplaced in Algebra 1A and placed them in an Algebra 1 class. We are currently working on our Inequalities unit. We will have a summative test on September 20 over solving inequality problems. We will begin our 5 week Student Learning Objective (SLO) Solving Systems of Equalities and Inequalities on or about 21 September.
Student of the Month
September's Character Trait - Respect
SO: Dhania Bonner
According to Dhania’s nominating teacher, “Dhania is always respectful during instruction. She always is cordial as she enters the classroom, respectfully greeting myself and my co-teacher, exhibiting another aspect of respect beyond the "basic" classroom etiquette.”
Overall: Michaela Reed
According to Michaela’s nominating teacher, “Michaela is always one of the first students to arrive in the morning and she is always very positive. Every morning she asks me how my morning has been. She just seems to really care about others.”
Congratulations to all students who received awards!
