A Note from Our Principal
Dear North Beach Families and Community,
This week our 5th grade students led our monthly community time celebration. They reviewed big deals/little deals with the younger students by acting out skits. We’re proud of the emerging leadership skills of our students. Students from every class were recognized for acts of kindness during the assembly this week as well.
We’ve had a few more staff changes here at North Beach. Our 4th grade teacher, Ms. Zweiback, was given the opportunity to return to her previous school, Northgate, and so we said good-bye to her last week. This week, we are lucky to welcome Meredith Lewis to our school to replace Ms. Zweiback. Ms. Lewis comes to us from the Advanced Learning department. We are so happy to have her here.
We also say good-bye to Carol Burton, who, due to changes in district staffing, was able to accept a fulltime position at another school. Replacing her will be Dierdre Lacambra who comes to us from John Hay. We are very excited to have her continue the new music program here, starting October 14th. Ms. Burton’s last day at North Beach will be October 10th.
If you were able to attend this week’s assembly, or any other event in our cafeteria, you have seen the variety of national flags on display. We want to ensure that flags representing all North Beach families are hanging in the cafeteria. If we are missing yours, please email suzanne.hurley@gmail.com so that we can order it.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Counselor’s Corner
In last week’s update, I included a summary of our RULER program at North Beach. This week, I am highlighting the 3rd RULER tool, the Meta Moment which will be a focus for our school this month. The Meta-moment teaches self-regulation strategies and how to handle ourselves appropriately when in stressful situations. It is a 6-step process that prompts users to be self- aware, stop, invoke an image of their “best self” and select a strategy that will lead to a successful outcome. For our primary students, we simplify the Meta-Moment to just 4 steps:
1. Notice that your feelings have changed.
2. Stop and calm your body.
3. Make a plan about
what to do next.
4. Try your plan, and be your best self!
The STOP step is the hardest part of the Meta-moment – for both kids and adults, so we try to give our students at North Beach lots of opportunities to practice taking Meta-moments (or pausing to breathe), even when they are not having a strong feeling. As you may know, we start every day with a school-wide Meta-moment – a chance for students and staff (and families if they are in the building) to stop and breathe together and think about how we are feeling and strategize about how to help ourselves if we’re not in a good space for learning.
You can help your student by practicing at home – modeling taking a break and breathing if you’re having a strong feeling and encouraging this strategy in your student as well. North Beach classrooms have a break area or chair available if students need a few moments to regulate their emotions before returning to the day’s activities.

Learn About the School Board Candidates at Our Candidate Forum
On Thursday, October 17, 6:30-8pm, the PTA is hosting an educational forum for the school board candidates in November’s election. Their term lasts four years so this election will greatly impact your child’s educational future at Seattle Public Schools. Each candidate will introduce themselves, followed by a discussion on topics that may include but are not limited to: funding, educational equity, school conditions, enrollment, and school safety. Arik Korman, communications director of the League of Education Voters and a North Beach parent, will moderate the forum. Candidates who have thus far confirmed their attendance include Eric Blumhagen and Liza Rankin for District 1, Chandra Hampson and Rebecca Muniz for District 3, and Leslie Harris and Molly Mitchell for District 6. We are currently creating a survey for parents to identify their top concerns. We’ll send it out via Konstella once it’s ready. If you would like to make any suggestions of topics before then, please feel free to email me (Suzanne Hurley) at president@northbeachpta.org.
Show Your North Beach Pride on the Outside!

PTA Spotlight on Volunteers
Thank you to Charlie Davis, Amy Stone, Tiffany Anderson, Debbie Wayne, and Cynthia Eade for organizing the parent social Thursday night. They worked hard to make it a fun evening out for adults. (And even though I’m writing this before the event actually happens, I’m sure it will be amazing!)

Congratulations from the North Beach PTA and Disney Points of Lights Program!
Amelia’s name was drawn at random and she and her immediate family will receive one day Park Hopper passes to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure! Thanks to her and the other 43 people for volunteering at our Community Clean Up, your dedication to the school shines in all that you do.
Flu Shots are coming to North Beach School!
Protect yourself, your child, and your community from the flu. The best protection from influenza illness is by having a flu shot. Flu is a leading cause of work and school absence, as well as, hospital visits in the winter. School Nurses are leading the effort to get a large percentage of our total student population vaccinated against the flu.
Seattle Visiting Nurse Association nurses return this year to administer annual flu shots at school on Tuesday, October 22nd from 1:00-3:00 PM. Students (ages 4 and older), staff and community members can sign up to get the flu shot. All SPS insurance is accepted and most forms of insurance (including Apple Health and Medicaid) and cash or check ($40) are accepted. Families who have no insurance can write “No Insurance” and the student can still get a flu shot.
A thimerosal-free vaccine is available for pregnant women. The double dose version recommended for adults over age 65 is not available.
The consent form needs to be completely filled out and returned to the school office as soon as possible. Consent forms were sent home in KidMail and can be found on Konstella.
Questions?? https://www.seattleschools.org/cms/One.aspx?pageId=53774927&portalId=627#fluschool or contact your School Nurse, Julie Kaloper, RN jkaloper@seattleschools.org or 206-252-1517.
Help to protect yourself, your loved ones and our entire school community—get your flu shot!!

Ballard High School Playmakers
The Ballard High School Playmakers will present three dynamic theatrical productions this year. We appreciate you sharing this news with students and families.
Radium Girls | October 17, 18, 19, 24, 25 and 26, 201
A hundred years ago, radium was a miracle cure used to fight cancer. It was quickly commercialized and used in products for consumers, including luminous watches that glowed in the dark. Radium Girls tells the story of the New Jersey factory girls who hand-painted the dials until they mysteriously became ill, started dying, and ultimately fought back.
Musical Theater production:
Xanadu | March 18, 19, 20, 26, 27 and 28, 2019
This comedy musical is based on the film which starred Olivia Newton-John. It’s 1980, and Venice Beach chalk-artist Sonny is frustrated by his mural of the Greek muses. A Greek muse named Kira dispatches to L.A., disguised as a human to encourage him in his art. Together they dream of opening a roller disco club named Xanadu. Xanadu is a love story with legwarmers and campy music.
Rumors | May 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, and 16, 2019
Set in the 1980s at a large home just north of Manhattan, the deputy mayor of New York has accidentally shot himself. As four couples gather for a 10th anniversary wedding party, the mayor’s lawyer must quickly concoct a story to avoid a scandal. Speculation quickly piles up, leading to laughable, ludicrous moments. Rumors is written by Neil Simon.

Ballard High Marching Band Wins at Leavenworth Parade
After a series of unexpected obstacles last Saturday on their way to the Leavenworth Autumn Leaf Festival, the Ballard High School Marching band literally stepped off the bus and into the parade to claim recognition as the best of 19 bands in the parade--and to also win first place in their division.
Up next is the band's annual half-time field show at the Ballard Homecoming Game (v Chief Sealth) this Friday, October 4, featuring a 10-minute Aretha Franklin tribute that includes her greatest hits: Think, Natural Woman, and Respect. Game starts at 5 p.m. and the band's performance will likely be around 5:45 p.m. or 6 p.m. For an idea of what to expect, watch this video from last year’s Disney tribute (be sure to watch until the end): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SP4k3YfN5O0&feature=youtu.be
The Ballard High School Marching Band, still one of the largest in the city, will be rehearsing all day this Friday on the Ballard High School football field if you'd like to record a segment or arrange for an interview.
The full press release/story about Saturday's whirlwind win is attached. We hope you can share this information with your community and audiences. If you need more information or photos, or would like to do a story on the band, please contact me at 206-465-8542 or bpabpublicity@gmail.com or contact Director of Bands Michael James at mijames@seattleschools.org 206.252.1034.
