Guidelines for Writing an Assembly Member
If you can't make the meeting but feel strongly about advocating on behalf of Palmer High School or the district my wonderful Language Arts teachers put together a guideline for doing so. You will also find the email contacts to reach directly to your district representative.
Writing a Letter to the Mat-Su Borough Assembly
When writing to the Mat-Su Borough Assembly, consider including the following elements:
1. Greeting
Examples:
o Dear Mat-Su Borough Assembly,
o Members of the Assembly:
o To the Borough Mayor and Members of the Assembly:
On the following page are the members of the Mat-Su Borough Assembly. You might
choose to write your letter to the mayor and assembly members as a group or to the
assembly member who represents your district.
2. Paragraph 1: Positive testimony about your school
What kind of stakeholder are you in MSBSD schools? A parent? Student? An employer of
students/graduates?
Describe a positive aspect of the school you are most closely associated with.
o How is that aspect of the school affecting your student now?
o Do you anticipate it affecting your student in the future? How so?
The more personal your letter, the better. If your student has had a particularly meaningful
experience in a specific classroom, program, activity, or sport, write about that. Highlight
what is meaningful to you.
3. Paragraph 2: Advocate for full funding
Ask the assembly to support education funding at 6.5 million dollars.
4. Paragraph 3: Thanks
Thank the Mayor and Assembly members for their service and support of public schools.
5. Sign your name and send your letter.
