Attendance Updates
There are several ways a parent can inform the school of a student absence
- “Report a Student Absence” from the school website on the Home Page https://schools.smcps.org/ghes/
- Email directly to Sheila Bowling the Attendance Secretary at shbowling@smcps.org
- Call the school at 301-863-4064 ext. 21104 and leave a detailed message about why your student was absent
School attendance has a huge impact on a student’s academic success starting in Pre-Kindergarten and continuing through high school. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school safely and on time every day. Regular and consistent attendance is necessary for student achievement, graduation, and college, and career readiness. A student is now considered habitually truant if they are unlawfully absent for 8 days in a marking period, 15 days in a semester, and 20 days in a school year.
Documentation of an absence must be sent to the school within 3 days of the absence.

The application also features a mobile friendly platform. This account will need to be monitored for information regarding submission status, acceptance/waitlist notifications. • All applications must be completed online. The order in which the application is submitted does not impact the selection process. It does not matter whether a family submits an application on the first day or the last day since the lottery is a random, computer-based drawing. The application is available in multiple languages. • The official lottery will be run at the end of January 2022. • Kindergarten families will be notified by email upon completion of the lottery of their acceptance or wait list status. All other families of students in grades 1-8 will receive an email of their wait list status and will be offered seats as they become open through the summer months. For more information, please contact the school’s main office at 301-863-9585, extension 0.
