A Note From Our Librarian, Mrs. Bonacci
Would you like FREE audio books for your family?
Studies show the importance of building vocabulary to improve reading proficiency and student achievement. In fact the root cause of reading problems is a lack of vocabulary. Students who are read to for five minutes each day add approximately 282,000 words to their vocabulary per year. Compare this to the 1,800,000 words per year that students are exposed to when they are read to for 20 minutes every day and you can see the obvious advantage these students have over their peers!
Audiobooks are a great way students can increase their vocabulary. Click here to learn how you and your family can access free audiobooks.
A Note From Our Music Teacher, Mrs. Vencill
February is a busy month in the OCT music room. We have several upcoming programs so mark your calendars NOW because you won't want to miss them! Kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade and 5th grade students will spend the next several months preparing for these performances and discussing performance/audience etiquette. More information regarding these performances will go home in grade level newsletters, but please feel free to call or email me anytime!

4th graders continue to work towards earning Recorder Karate belts and feel more and more confident reading music and playing their recorder every day.
After lots of hard work composing, reading and playing rhythm patterns, the 3rd graders are now working on adding PITCH to their rhythm. Students will become familiar with the lines and spaces of the treble clef staff so they can play their melodic patterns on Orff instruments.
I am so proud of our talented musicians! Keep up the awesome work, Tigers!
A Note From Our Art Teacher, Mrs. Morgan
The students have truly enjoyed learning about famous artists! Ask your child what they have learned about their specific artist.
Kindergarten and First grade are finishing up their art pieces inspired by Paul Klee and Henri Matisse.
Kindergarten used a variety of shapes to create a castle, now they are working on creating a cat out of shapes.
First grade discussed organic and geometric shapes, and then created a piece using scissors and paper. Now they are combining painting with paper cut outs to create a goldfish bowl scene.
Second grade is finishing up their Van Gogh inspired Sunflower still life by using watercolors and oil pastels.
Third grade is completing their Wayne Thiebaud inspired cupcake by mixing colors and using oil pastels.
Fourth and Fifth grade are finishing up their Wassily Kandinsky inspired abstract pieces. We focused on a variety of shapes, lines, design and color mixing to create their abstract piece.
When we are done exploring our artists, we will get the chance to explore 3D design and fiber art, like weaving, masks, and 3D sculptures.
A Note From Our P.E. Coaches, Coach Mester and Coach Mac
In the gym, we are finishing up our Newcomb games this week. We have witnessed some extremely exciting and competitive games. I am so proud of the teamwork and sportsmanship the students displayed during these hard fought matches! Next week we will begin learning Pickleball rules and skills essential for gameplay. We will continue Pickleball lessons into February. After Pickleball we will transition into soccer, while incorporating strength, fitness, and flexibility into our weekly lessons.
Keep up the great work!

Summer Enrichment Brochure Art Contest:
GCISD students of all ages are invited to create artwork illustrating the fun learning opportunities available through GCISD’s Summer Enrichment Program. This year’s theme is “Rockin' Through the Summer.” The winning artwork will serve as the cover design for the GCISD Summer Enrichment brochure, which will be posted on the website and provides information about registration and summer learning opportunities for students completing K-6th grades. Winning artwork will also be used to promote the Summer Enrichment Program through social media. The student who creates the winning entry will be recognized in the brochure and during a regular meeting of the GCISD Board of Trustees.
Art must be original and can be hand-drawn, painted, computer-designed or in any other medium. Judges will be looking for a design that is creative, appropriate and uses the “Rockin' Through the Summer” theme. Art should be on 8 ½” x 11” paper and submitted in color, but be able to be reproduced in black and white. Student's full name, school, grade and teacher's name should be on the BACK of the artwork. Please do not frame or mat entry to any size larger than 8 ½” x 11”. Our contest opened January 9, 2017, and the deadline for submitting the art is Friday, February 10th. Students should submit entries to our campus art teacher, Mrs. Morgan.
