Patriot's Pen
Week 6: October 1-5, 2018
Message from Mireles
I know this week is often filled with parent emails asking about last minute options for their child, students realizing that they do in fact, want to take you up on that retest ---and the infamous extra credit questions!!
There are often endless nights grading and the question of "should I or shouldn't I ---add a citizenship grade to this report card." LOL...
Oh the joys of report card time!
Not sure about ya'll, but I get so caught up in the day to day operations of our campus that I almost forget the other side of grades; what those grades say to children, to parents and how those grades define a child. It's a powerful thing to assign a grade, it's a judgement call and one that students often use to define their worth.
Keep on keepin' on and Happy Friday!

Montamat Minutes...
The PBIS Committee met three times this week, and will meet again on Monday to finalize plans to roll out a new Classroom Progressive Behavior Management Plan.
Their work has been passionate and inspiring, and all comes from the input you provided through last week's PBIS form. Thanks to everyone for being #RawlinsonUnited around this campus priority!
- Students leaving class for any reason should always have a pass. There is not a campus based pass in use at this point, any pass will do.
- Our custodians are working VERY hard for you every day! Taking care of this very large building is not easy, especially being short-handed. The district is short over 100 custodians and there are many Head Custodian openings that have not been filled, ours included. Be Kind and remind everyone to clean up their mess!!
DON'T FORGET!!

SPED SPOT
Yellow Folders/Data Collection:
Data collection forms track student progress toward a goal. These are the goals that the student is working on in your content area, or perhaps a behavior that is being monitored in your room. NISD requires that data is collected according to the level of support AND/OR based on the number of trials that is indicated in the goal. Data should be collected, and samples should be kept as evidence of how the student is making progress toward the goal. Yellow folders are distributed each six weeks or when a student has new goals that have been generated from their current ARD. Yellow folders are collected at the end of each six weeks- the Tuesday of week six- so that SE can report on the progress the student is making on their IEP Progress Report. This Progress Report is required to go out commensurate with the grade report card. Deadlines for turning in yellow folders is non-negotiable.
Data collection forms are also due when requested by a case manager to close out goals for an ARD. Assuring that your data collection is current will allow for accurate reporting and decision making.
The following dates are when you will turn in your completed Yellow/Data Collection folders
Oct 2 Nov 13 Jan 16 Feb 27 Apr 16 May 28
Please turn yellow folders into Christine Russell’s box by the due date. Even if your folder is empty, please turn it in!! Each six weeks case managers do have the ability to change who will collect data. If you did not have a yellow folder with data sheets one time, it does not mean that you will not have data sheets another. Please keep up with your folder!! #unitedwecollectdataDEAN'S DESK
Thoughts on Cheating and How to Respond
Every year teachers report cheating incidents and wonder what course of action they should take. Based on some of the ideas found in the article entitled, “Cheating and Plagiarizing” by Rick Wormeli, we have created the following protocol:
When a student cheats on a test, inform his/her parents of the cheating.
Give the student a temporary “F” but make the assignment recoverable in full.
“Receiving an F for plagiarizing or cheating without hope of recovery assures students won't learn the required content.” - Rick Wormeli
Require the student to do the learning and assessment all over again, but this time in an ethical manner.
Give the student a non-academic consequence as restitution for their transgression. At our upcoming Faculty Learning, Tuesday 10/2/18, the PBIS Committee will roll out the new Classroom Behavior Management Plan!
