PCM High School

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-teacher conferences will be held on 2/16 from 4-8pm and 2/18 from 3-7pm. These conferences may be held in-person or virtually. If you wish to schedule a virtual conference with a teacher, please contact them directly. If you plan to visit with teachers in-person, please follow the district's mask mandate when in the building. Thank you!

Homework Helpline

United Way of Central Iowa Homework Helpers Hotline connects volunteers with students (K-12 in Polk, Warren and Dallas counties), to provide free over-the-phone support, assistance, and encouragement outside of school hours. Students, parents and care providers can call 2-1-1 from their telephone where you will be prompted to select '7' to speak with a United Way Homework Helper. The free hotline is available from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m., Sunday through Thursday. If students live in Jasper County, simply choose a zip code from Polk County to get through.

Winter Formal and Prom

Unfortunately, due to the continuing COVID restrictions and current numbers, there will not be a Winter Formal this year. But, discussions surrounding prom have started and PCM High School is committed to communicating a plan for prom, which is on April 17th, in the very near future. Stay tuned!

Mask-Wearing Reminders

As a reminder students, staff and all visitors are still required to wear masks when on school property. This includes wearing masks correctly so that everyone is protected. Students are kindly reminded if they are not wearing a mask correctly, but after several reminders discipline in the form of detentions can be issued. Please remind your student to wear their masks correctly when at school! #strongertogether

Counseling Corner

Hello everyone! Hope you had a great January. Here's a few updates:

Virtual Financial Aid Night

On Monday, February 22nd @ 6:30pm ICAN will be doing a virtual presentation to help Juniors and their families understand the financial aid process. ICAN will be presenting to PCM and Newton. The presentation will be recorded for those who are unable to attend! Here is the zoom link and registration for those that are interested: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/8716100358883/WN_1Aa9uj4MRxKyfEoMIMHPgg

We have had 32 families who have completed the FAFSA. If you have a student who is thinking about going to college, you should complete the FAFSA. If you need assistance filling it out, you can set up an appointment with someone from the Iowa College Access Network (ICAN). You can set up a virtual meeting here. Please make sure you have everything you need before your appointment time. It would be beneficial to have the student and parent FSA ID (username and password) created ahead of time. These two sheets explain what you need to have prepared before the meeting: FAFSA Documents & FSA ID.

I sent this link out to seniors, but here is the ICAN Scholarship Database. It has a list of scholarships available. Here is the link to the list of scholarships specific to Iowa, Iowa Scholarships. They are all verified and safe to pursue. Check back often to see if any more open up. I will continue to send out emails with scholarships to seniors when I hear about them.

Another place to get scholarships is Raise.Me. This is a micro-scholarship program that allows students in 9th-12th grade to earn money toward college. By taking part in college planning activities, taking certain courses, and attending events, a student can earn money for college. Currently 150 colleges nationwide are part of Raise.Me including the following Iowa institutions:

  • Buena Vista University

  • Briar Cliff University

  • Cornell College

  • Drake University

  • Grand View University

  • Grinnell College

  • Luther College

  • University of Iowa

  • University of Northern Iowa

Let me know if you have any questions!

Welcome Mr. Koder!

Hello, My name is Skyler Koder and I'm a proud alumni of PCM. After graduating from PCM I attended Iowa State University, where I received my degree in Criminal Justice. After obtaining my degree, I began working at the Polk County Jail as a detention officer until switching careers, leading to my passion for working towards changing the lives of students! My wife Tanner and I met at Iowa State and just welcomed our first child. In my free time I like to coach wrestling and walk our two Goldendoodles. My job here at PCM will be to assist students in the Special Education program. Once I complete my classes for Special Education, I will be working as a Special Education Teacher. I'm excited to get back to my roots and show my passion for this career!
