September & October Report

Library Activity - September

  • 47 classes booked into the Learning Commons do research, novel selection, and Grade 8 orientations
  • Science 8 classes began their Science Fair projects with an introduction to the Research Process
  • The Explorations program for Elgin Park's designated gifted students began with great enthusiasm.
  • 16 students have joined our Advisory Team and work in the Learning Commons before school, at lunch and after school.
  • There were 853 transactions in September. This includes all sign-outs, returns and renewals.
The inaugural year of the Surrey Teens Read readers choice program was launched. The nominees for the 2013-2014 teen readers choice award are: Every Day by David Levithan, The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, Erebos by Ursula Poznanski, Son by Lois Lowry, The Running Dream by Wendelin van Draanen, The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker, Don't Turn Around by Michelle Gagnon, and Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi.

These titles are actively being promoted to students and we have multiple copies of each one to meet the popular demand. In order to vote for the best of the short listed titles, students must have read a minimum of 3 of the selected titles. Voting starts in May 2014.

National Playdough Day

In September we celebrated National Playdough Day and invited students to come to the Learning Commons and play and create. Several students, including many of the BASES students, came in and relived their childhood memories as they squished and smelled and styled the playdough into all sorts of creative shapes. Some international students got to experience playdough for the very first time. A fun time was had by all.

Games Centre

In the Learning Commons we are actively promoting intellectual pursuits. Since those intellectual pursuits are not always quiet reading and studying, we have added a games centre in the Learning Commons for students to play with their friends. We hope to add other opportunities for students in the future.

Library Activity - October

  • 54 classes booked into the Learning Commons to do research, use the computers,
  • A grade 7 BASES student from Ocean Cliff has been visiting the Learning Commons weekly as part of her transition program.
  • The Welcome Centre Reading Buddies program has started. A week long training session was held in October and weekly sessions will run until Winter Break.
  • Explorations students have identified their project focus and are actively working towards their goals. A wide range of interests are being fostered. Some of the inquiry projects are: generating renewable electricity by harnessing the water discharged in the downspouts of our homes; studying the question "what entertains us" and creating a video series; writing, directing, starring in, and producing a movie; learning the piano; digital music mixing and live DJ'ing; and learning American sign language.
  • The Counselling Department has been hosting presentations by post-secondary institutions in the morning and at lunch. So far we have had visits from: SWAP, University of Waterloo Math Department, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and Western University. More presentations are planned for November.
  • The Learning Commons staff and Library Science students researched and produced a 20 Years in Review video series in celebration of Elgin Park's 20 Year Anniversary.
  • There were 424 transactions in October. This includes all sign-outs, returns and renewals.
  • Currently there are 528 items on loan. Of those 355 are overdue. We are still finding it a challenge to get students to return their materials on time.

Collection Development

Since the end of last school year, we have added:

  • 143 new titles
  • 6 iMac desktop computers
  • 10 iPads
  • Apple TV
  • 55" Screen TV
  • Video Camera & Tripod
  • Green Screen photography & film backdrop

Coming Soon!

The Video Production Zone is still under construction as we try to find funding for the necessary lighting to make the green screen usable. An error in the catalog indicated that the lighting was coming with the screen as a kit, but that was not the case. Gloria is working with purchasing to figure it out.

I am surveying staff to gauge interest in mini Professional Development activities with a technology focus that I will be offering in the Learning Commons starting in November.

More great new titles.

November special events and book displays:

  • Media Literacy Week
  • National Hockey Week
  • Anti-Bullying Week
