WIZARD WEEKLY
Week of January 9-13
WORD FROM THE EMERALD CITY
~ It's cold. No, it's warm, no it's cold again....That's how our weather has been lately, and this week will be no different. Stock up on vitamin C and try to stay healthy. This crazy weather isn't helping with the sicknesses going around!! I think I'm going to start keeping an outfit for every season in my office, since the weather changes each day! We will have some beautiful spring temps this week, then it may be getting cold again over the weekend. What a crazy winter!!
~ We are starting our ICLE walks this week. We will have one or 2 grade levels per week from now until the middle of February. This a learning experience for everyone, and remember we are looking at instructional strategies and what the kids are doing. This is NON evaluative, and this will never be used on appraisals and/or walk through documentation. This is strictly for growing purposes and to see where we need to increase our practices in order to ensure student success.
~This Friday is a half day for students. The afternoon is for staff development. I know grades are due and time is always needed, so I will honor that by allowing this time for you to plan in your rooms. Everyone will need to stay until your contract time is over, so please do not leave before 3:20 to ensure you are getting the most out of the planning and work time. You will have lunch on your own, and please be back on campus by 1:00.
~ I have CARE team meetings scheduled with several grade levels this week and next. If you have students who you need to meet to discuss, please make sure to schedule a meeting so that we can collaborate and brainstorm next steps.
Campus News
~Shout out to Amarisa and her husband for coming up this weekend to help with the Makerspace room! We are getting SO close to it being complete. Bobby and I are now masters at using liquid nail and the caulking guns..haha!! I'm excited at the progress, and we should have it completed in the next 2 weeks!!
~ Last call for club changes! I will be sending out the sign up schedule and excel document this week. Make sure to let me know ASAP if you wanted to change your club for this round.
~ We will have a staff meeting today (Monday) in the library at 3:00. This will be to explain about the A-F rating as well as discuss the proposed charter school that could be opening next year on Old Decatur. Knowledge is power, so the more you all are informed about events, the more likely it is that truthful and sound information will be spread, rather than incorrect data.
~Don't forget to let me know if you're interested in attending Great Expectations that first week in June after we get out. We have 10 spots available. So far, I have Angie, Gina, and Kelly Stowe on the list. This is a great opportunity, so if you haven't been trained, I highly encourage you to go!
~ Make sure you are turning in your "word up" level sheets! I KNOW these kids are using the words, so please make sure to encourage them to use them in their speaking and writing, and showcase when they earn the "word up" sticks for the key chain!! Thank you to those who have turned them in, but I know many more are worthy of being recognized.
~ I need numbers of students for PRIDE Posse parties. Thank you to 5th grade and 4th grade for getting me your approximate numbers. Please get those to me ASAP, so I can plan accordingly! I will keep you posted about the date of the PRIDE Posse party once I secure the bounce houses. The end of the semester is THIS Friday! Can you believe it? We're half way through the year.
Be Vocabulous!
Continue to discuss the vocabulary with your students! It's making a big difference!
Here is the copy of the s'more newsletter about the vocabulary program. It has all the words listed for the year, so you can plan ahead! It has each word listed and the grade level responsible. The kids really enjoyed this last year, and I think this was something I had more comments from parents about than anything! They would comment about their students knowing the meanings of words that they didn't even know. The vocabulary parade was a big hit too. Even the older kids got into it and had fun being creative and participating.
Please turn in the "Word Up" Levels sheets when you have students who display the appropriate use of the words. Obviously, the younger they are, the more "adaptation" needs to occur in order to receive the levels, but the students who received the tags last year, LOVED it!! I will put the "Word Up Level" sheet on canvas!
As a reminder, the way the "Word Up Levels" work, goes like this...
All students will start as rookies and all students will have a chance to move up as many levels as they would like. Spirit Tags (that PTA is selling) will be used for levels 2 thru 5 and when a student reaches level 2 thru 5 they will receive a spirit tag for that level from the principal.
Teachers will nominate students to move up through the levels.
