From The Counseling Center
From the Counseling Center:
So what is SSL (Student Service Learning)?
Service Learning is a teaching method that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum-based learning.
Students must earn 75 hours of service for Graduation.
Students earn 15 hours in each of four grades in which activities are included in the curriculum:
6th grade Science
7th grade Social Studies
8th grade English Language Arts
10th grade Life Skills
In addition to these 60 hours, students must earn 15 hours undertaking independent projects. Independent hours can be a student-designed project that benefits the community OR served with a community-based agency or organization which partners with WCPS. To assure the plan meets Maryland guidelines, student-designed projects must be pre-approved by the school based coordinator, which is Mrs. Ganoe or Mrs. McDermott. Record cards should be submitted to the school coordinator in the same calendar year as the hours are earned. Students may begin working on independent project during 8th grade.
If you have further questions about SSL, please come see us in the counseling center!
