Counselor's Corner
I had the privilege of visiting the kindergarten classrooms this week and providing anti-bully lessons. We discussed the definition of bullying which includes the following:
Bullying is repeated
Bullying is on purpose
There is an imbalance of power where the targeted child feels afraid.
We then read the story, Llama Llama and the Bully Goat and discussed the following strategies that can be used if a student feels bothered or bullied by another student:
Ignore
Walk Away
Talk Friendly
Talk Firmly
Get Adult Help
I enjoyed visiting your child’s classroom and look forward to visiting again soon!
Sincerely,
Nancy Logue
School Counselor
Media Center Volunteers
It is another busy year in the Harrison Parkway Media Center! Students are coming in every day for library lessons, book exchange and research.
I can always use more smiling faces and helping hands. If you have some free time during the day, please consider being a Library Media Center Volunteer. The parent volunteers help with a variety of tasks. You may check items in or out, shelve books, assist students in locating books on the shelves, make copies, or assist with processing new books. Questions? Please contact Mrs. Kristin Sager, Library Media Specialist, at ksager@hse.k12.in.us or 915-4210, ext. 1792.
If you would like to help, please make sure that you have a current background check on file and that you have completed the HSE Anti-bullying Training Webinar. These links are found on the Harrison Parkway Elementary website, under Quick Links : http://www.hse.k12.in.us/hpe/home.aspx

Online School Directory
The online school directory is now available to all families in Skyward. This year the directory is based on an opt-in model. Families must choose to show their contact information in order to be visible in the directory.
To opt-in, click on "My Account" in the upper right corner of your Family Access account. From there, check the boxes for the information you wish to make visible under the School Directory section and then Save. Families can make changes to this section anytime throughout the school year.
Sign In Procedures
As a reminder, the sign in procedure at Harrison Parkway includes signing your child in or out using a computer. If you are signing your child out of school, please have your driver's license with you, as you will need it to complete the sign-out process.
Attendance Line Voicemail
If your child will be absent from school, please call the HPE Attendance Line by 9:00 a.m. at 915-4210. If you know in advance that your child will be absent, you may call the attendance line's voicemail anytime and leave a message. If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (available in the HPE office) at least one week prior to the absence.
Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.

Fishers Nickel Plate District Transforms into Halloween Village for Boo Bash
City offers safe trick-or-treating alongside opportunities to connect with local businesses
Mark the calendar, plan a costume, and get ready for the return of Boo Bash in the Nickel Plate District. Once again, the City of Fishers is transforming the Nickel Plate District into a Halloween village to offer safe trick-or-treating, live music, games and activities, and even a costume contest for children under 12 and families. Boo Bash returns on Friday, October 23rd from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and is free for anyone to attend.
Roughly 50 local businesses and organizations will be represented at trick-or-treat booths during the event, which means while children enjoy playing a game or getting a piece of candy, parents can enjoy learning more about services available in the community. Complimentary Pat’s Philly Pretzels and hot chocolate will be available at the concession stand on a first come, first served basis throughout the event. Boo Bash also features a costume contest for infants through 12 year old children. This year, the costume contest also includes a family category, so start planning now!
Boo Bash is a free event that welcomes Fishers residents and those in surrounding communities. Those attending the event are encouraged to visit the website and plan ahead; 116th Street will be closed at the railroad crossing for construction during the event. The detour map will assist families in planning their route and parking around the Nickel Plate District. Those attending are also encouraged to share their photos using the hashtag #BooBash during the event.
About Boo Bash:
Fishers Parks & Recreation strives to connect businesses with residents during diverse, community-wide events. 60 vendor booths are available for local businesses and organizations. Anyone interested in hosting a booth are encouraged to contact Lorna Steele at steelel@fishers.in.us, today.
Fishers DPW Invites Residents Behind-the-Scenes for a free Open House on Oct. 27th
“Our team loves the opportunity to connect with residents during the open house,” stated DPW Director, Eric Pethtel. “It’s not uncommon to see DPW staff painting alongside children, explaining the machinery and enjoying the open house just as much as our guests do.”
Light refreshments will be served during the event, and children can paint-a-plow or street sign that they might see around the city in the future. Fishers DPW includes four divisions; street maintenance, park maintenance, facility maintenance and water quality, and staff from each division will be able to explain the role they play in keeping our community vibrant.
The Fishers DPW garage is located at 10200 Eller Road and parking is available onsite. Attendees are welcome to stop by any time, and parents are encouraged to bring a camera! Connect with the department on Twitter @FishersDPW for reminders leading up to the open house.

Calling all parents, sign your little ones up for a program that helps them spend some of their extra energy! Preschool Tumbling is back and promises to teach your child new tumbling skills while they make new friends and gain independence.
