2011 Bastrop Fires
Laramie & Kelsey
Event description
The 2011 Bastrop Wildfire started around 3 PM on September 4, 2011 this year was our bad drought that we had come in counter with. The wildfire had 30 miles per hour winds blowing east and started by toppled trees which tumbled into electrical lines at two locations creating sparks that fell onto dry grass and leaf litter below. This wild fire had two confirmed deaths and 1,673 destroyed homes. The wildfire caused $325 million of insured property damage. The fire moved into Bastrop's state park, destroying 2 scenic overlooks constructed during the "New Deal" of the 1930's, as well as the vintage rain shelter building.
Restoration Efforts
The 20ll Bastrop wildfire was the biggest fire Texas has ever had. The Bastrop state park had to remove the dead trees that could fall onto roads or power lines. They have over 2 million trees to plant in a 5 years time, all the buildings that were destroyed were rebuilt. Without the trees in place to hold the soil, there was more erosion. The amount of money that had to go into this disastor was over 325 million dollars.
