History of Modern Dance
Modern dance originated from America during the turn of the 20th century. It all began with a handful of choreographers and dancers rebelling against the idea of the two popular forms of dance: ballet and vaudeville. They were not fond of the rigid nature of those dances. Instead, they wanted to be taken seriously as artists, not entertainers. Loie Fuller, Isadora Duncan, Ruth St. Denis, and Ted Shawn are considered to be the founders of modern dance.
Martha Graham
Martha Graham had one of the longest career in dance history. Her company Martha Graham Dance Company is still going strong although she died in 1991.
Mary Wigman
Mary Wigman was one of the great European dancers in the 20th century. She described her style of dancing as dark and expressive.
Lester Horton
Lester Horton had a breif but brilliant career as a dancer. He was a dancer, choreographer, and teacher.
