A Word From Principal Haynes
Greetings Parents,
Thank you so much for all of your hard work in getting your students ready for participation in our Vocabulary Parade! The parade was an amazing event and it was so delightful to see so many of you join us at the park. We hope that you enjoyed it! The opportunity to allow parents to participate was the brainchild of one of our 5th grade teachers, Ms. Drummond! From there, the idea snowballed and we were able to reach out to the City of Sunrise to allow us to come out and share this with you!! We hope that you will enjoy future events with us as well. I also want to thank you that we only had ONE late student on Friday!! Won't he do it!! Now, let's continue to bring that SAME energy each and every day by being on time!
Student learning begins at the bell. At 8:40AM, we have the morning announcements. At 8:50 all of our students drop everything and read, then at 9AM our Walk to Read reading intervention program begins!! We don't want our students RUSHING into the day. We like their days to begin calmly. Beginning this week, we will be pulling names on the morning announcements for special "prizes"! The student MUST be present, in class during the announcements to "win"!! Don't let your child miss out! You never know which day we will pull the name for the prize!!
Our students took their second common formative assessment (CFA) for ELA this past Thursday!! The results were AMAZING!! Several students improved their score over double digits from the first CFA!! That's great! I know that they can continue to do it and that they can improve each and every test. Many of them were excited to share their scores with me! Ask your child how they did! You will be proud of them. ALL STUDENTS in K-5 took a test! The next one for reading is in three weeks.
Coming soon, all grades will take a math assessment and students in grade 5 will take one for science. Remember, students MUST meet promotion criteria to be promoted this year. On the upcoming interim reports, you will find out if your child is in danger and needs additional assistance. Communicate with your child's teacher. Make sure you child is completing classwork and homework to prepare them for their assessments.
THIS MESSAGE REMAINS IMPORTANT AND URGENT: Parents, we STILL need your help! We are having a serious problems with some parents arriving late to pick up their students (3:45PM and beyond). School ends at 3:10PM, there is no formal supervision for your child after 3:40PM (we are required by SBBC policy to provide supervision 30 minutes before and after school). You must be on time to pick up your child each and every day. Our campus monitor leaves and the front gates need to be closed because there are students on campus for after care. Please be on time so that you are not inconvenienced with having to walk up to pick up your child. The gate will close and be locked at 3:40PM.
Please remember that BCPS has adopted a mask mandate. As such, ALL persons entering campus are expected to be masked. This includes staff, students, parents, and visitors. Students do not wear masks while eating or during outside recess/activities. Please pay close attention to the information in the newsletter and visit our school website for the most up to date information!
Here are some ways you can support learning at home:
- Have your child go on iReady nightly (math one day, reading the next day)
- Have your child READ every night or practice recognizing letters/sight words
- Have your child TALK to you about what they read so you can see if they understand it
- Have your child practice their math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
- Have your child practice WRITING, both handwriting and writing information
- TALK to them about what they are doing in school
There is a LOT of information in this newsletter, but PLEASE read it thoroughly!!
Wishing you an AMAZING and BLESSED week ahead!!
Principal Haynes

HEADPHONES FOR STUDENTS!!
If you have not purchased headphones for your child, PLEASE do so ASAP. In order for the children to work on iReady and other computer programs, they NEED headphones! You should purchase a good, steady pair that could last all year. Ear buds are not good for using at school, students need the kind that fits over their ears. Place the headphones in the ziploc bag to REMAIN at school so they don't get damaged.
Parent/School Compact
Parents, on August 29th, the Parent/School Compact was sent home with all students. You were to sign and return it to the school. If you have not done so, your child's teacher will be reaching out to send home another form for you to sign. A copy of the Parent/School Compact is also located on our school website. Thank you for partnering with us to help increase student achievement here at Village Elementary!!
