AFTERSCHOOL ENRICHMENT FEBRUARY 1st- APRIL 2nd
We have sent home invitations for afterschool enrichment. Unfortunately, this time we have fewer staff members available and will be limiting the program to grades 1,2, and 3. Students receiving Title I services will be invited as a first priority followed by the rest of the students in the first, second, and third grade. Students will experience explicit lessons and extra skill practice in a variety of areas including science, technology, engineering, arts, physical fitness, cooking, gardening, and mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.). Students will begin with an after school snack before breaking into their workshops. Transportation for this program includes bussing and parent pick up at 4:30. Please send your responses in as soon as possible.
Thank you to the FIBER FRIENDS of Pittsfield for the donation of hats & mittens
PALMYRA REDEMPTION SUPPORTS SOMERSET ELEMENTARY PTF
The Palmyra Redemption Center is now a fundraising partner with our PTF. If you have recyclable bottles and cans you are willing to donate, please drop them off at Palmyra Redemption on the corner of Rte 2 and Gee Road (across from the old Palmyra Elementary School). Proceeds will be distributed to the PTF to sponsor assemblies, Field Day, and other special events at Somerset Elementary.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THE BOOK FAIR
Scholastic has let us know that your participation in the last book fair translated into 116,349 Voluntary Reading Minutes and placed 2 books in the hands of every student!
The results indicate our community is dedicated to raising lifelong readers. Independent reading has been proven to improve test scores and reading confidence. Therefore, the fair’s success is sure to help continue inspiring students throughout the year!
BOOSTING CONFIDENCE IN CHILDREN
Self esteem comes from feeling competent and successful, which, as growth mindset teaches, stems from hard work and useful strategies. So the same steps that build a growth mindset also help build confidence. Here are some tips:
- Choose praise carefully: Growth mindset research shows that praising kids too much OR praising them for being smart leads to a fixed mindset. They give up more easily when things are hard because they worry it means they're not smart. Studies show they have more anxiety, less confidence, and lower performance. They're also more competitive and quicker to tear others down.
- Tips for praising children:
- Praise effort rather than natural ability or intelligence
- Be specific so that your child knows exactly what he or she is doing right
- Be sincere. Children know when they get empty compliments
- Avoid using praise all the time. Think quality and not quantity
COFFEE HOUR AND CUB ASSEMBLY FOR NEW FAMILIES
We opened 2024 with a number of new students and families. It is not easy to be new, and we would like to extend a warm welcome by inviting new families to our "All School Meeting" on Friday, February 2nd. This will give participants a chance to learn about the school and see our whole student body coming together for the weekly celebration of the "Cub Awards". Following the assembly, families are invited to the cafeteria for coffee and muffins along with a brief information session and an opportunity to ask questions and/or share ideas. If you are new this year, please consider joining us on February 2nd @ 8:00am.
