Principal's Message from Mrs. Sierra
Hello Champion families! The school year has gotten off to a great start and we couldn't be more proud of our staff and students. We appreciate all of your support these first few weeks of school. Our students have adjusted to their new routines with much learning and growth already taking place. We see so much hope in our Champions and our staff is ready to support our students every step of the way. Our goal is for every student to have a successful school year. Please make sure your child is coming to school daily. Every grade level matters because each one builds upon the other. Let's work together this year to make a difference for your Champion!
With respect,
Christine Sierra, Principal

Calk-Wilson PTA Memebership Drive
This is our year Champions to increase the number of PTA members we had from last school year. The cost is $7 per adult ages 18 and older. Joining PTA does not mean you have to volunteer. Dress Code Reminders
*Cowboy boots and open toed sandals/flip flops/Crocs may not be worn to school. Closed toe shoes such as tennis shoes are highly recommended. This will help to avoid any student injuries throughout the day. There are exceptions on dress up days, but students will still need to wear closed toe shoes for PE. Sometimes this means bringing a change of shoes to school on dress up days.
*Shorts worn to school should not be shorter than 3 inches above the knee.

College & Career Week September 25th-29th
Students and staff are welcome to follow our dress up day schedule for College & Career Week. Please remember that all attire must still be appropriate for school, All dress up days at Calk-Wilson Elementary are always optional for students. Thank you to our counselors, Ms. Pena and Mr. Lynch, for planning this fun week of dress up days for our school.
Accelerated Reader Program
Our Champions will be working on their personal reading goals this school year and the Accelerated Reader program is one way to guide a student as to which level they are reading on in school. This reading level will tell them which level of books to pick out at our library. The level is called the zone of promixal development or ZPD.
At this point in the school year, students in Grades 1-5 already have their "ZPD" and are now able to check out books from our library. Each student has an AR folder where they track each book they read. The goal is to read the book at least two times and take a quiz on the computer with a passing grade of an 80%. Your student knows how many points he/she should be getting each week and by the end of the six weeks. We enourage you to discuss with your child the importance of reaching their weekly and six weeks reading goal. Teachers are required to monitor their students AR progress in class. Students are provided the opportunity to read for at least 20 minutes each day in their classrooms. We strongly encourage that our students continue to read at home as well. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you need more information on your child's AR progress in school. The more you read...the more you know!

What is Empathy?
Empathy is the ability to be aware of, understand, and be sensitive to another person’s feelings. Instead of focusing on how these feelings impact ourselves, empathy motivates us to focus on others and respond with care and compassion.
