NEW: This Week's Message from Mr. Smith
Northwest High School Families,
Happy Sunday! It is hard to believe that we are halfway through marking period 3. We have an important week ahead with a half day this Friday, March 3 for interims. Be sure to work hard and reach out to your teachers for any support with classes. Congratulations to our winter athletes who completed the season this weekend. For those athletes who won their respective regional competitions and will continue on to more competitions, Good Luck! We have several wrestlers who are advancing. A reminder that tomorrow is the last day to register for spring sports!
A reminder for students in grades 9-11! You can order your student photos by visiting vosphoto.com/uc. Use your student ID when prompted for the online code.
We are continuing to conduct regular hall sweeps. It is important that every student is on time and ready to learn at the beginning of every single class period. As has been noted in the previous newsletters, students will no longer receive warnings. Any student caught in a hall sweep will be assigned an after school detention.
Students who are interested in getting their learners permit, you will have the opportunity to take the Learners Permit test at Northwest on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 7 and Tuesday, April 18. The test will begin promptly at 2:30 in room 100. You should stop by the main office to pick up a permission slip.

Montgomery County Public Schools
NEW: Choose Respect Montgomery 2023
Montgomery County Public Schools participates in the annual Choose Respect program in collaboration with community partners to teach students how to have and maintain healthy relationships and access resources if they or someone they know is in an abusive relationship. Students are encouraged to enter a Public Service Announcement (PSA) Video Contest and attend a community event, RespectFest, on Sunday, April 16, 2023. The PSA video contest challenges teens to create an original video to promote awareness of dating violence/abuse among teens. The contest is open to all 6th - 12th grade students living in Montgomery County. Students can earn 10 SSL hours for video submission. A judging panel will review all submissions, with cash prizes going to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place and Honorable Mention prizes going to 4th and 5th place. Submissions are due by March 13, 2023. For more information about the Choose Respect Montgomery program, visit the MPCS Choose Respect webpage.
REMINDER: Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention
Northwest High School’s school-based mental health staff will deliver a lesson to students about mental health awareness and suicide prevention during an English class in March. The lessons are from the Signs of Suicide (SOS) youth suicide prevention program that has demonstrated an improvement in students’ knowledge and adaptive attitudes toward suicide risk and depression. All students in Grades 9 through 12 will participate in a class lesson that includes video clips and/or discussion. After the lesson, students will fill out a form to let the school’s Student Well-being Team know if they would like to talk to someone to get help for themselves or a friend. Students will also receive a handout of school, local, and national resources available to support mental health needs. Families who would like to learn more about the Signs of Suicide program can attend the February 21st PTSA meeting, where members of the counseling department will share information about suicide prevention and the plans for student lessons. If you have any questions or concerns about this program, please do not hesitate to contact your student’s counselor at 240-740-7080.
REMINDER: Maryland State School Survey
Maryland requires that all public schools survey students about school climate as a part of our accountability system. The purpose of the survey is to gain valuable information about the quality and character of the learning environment in each school so that they can promote a climate that supports student learning. Northwest High School students in grades 9 through 11 will take the survey in their Social Studies classes between March 20th through March 31st. The survey will take about 30 minutes and will ask students about topics such as student engagement, interactions with adults and with other students in the school, the school environment, bullying, and safety. The survey will not ask about a student’s personal experiences and will not ask the student to provide any information that might violate his or her privacy. For more information about the Maryland State survey, please read the memo linked here.

REMINDER: Northwest Earns AP Computer Science Award!
Northwest High School's Computer Science Department was just awarded College Board's Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in AP Computer Science Principles. Female students who take APCSP are more than five times as likely to major in computer science in college.
Providing female students with access to computer science courses is critical to ensuring gender parity in the industry’s high-paying jobs and to driving innovation, creativity, and representation. The median annual wage for computer and information technology occupations was $97,430 in May 2021. See Mr. Sell in Room 104 with any questions about taking a computer science course next year at Northwest.
REMINDER: SAT School Day is Coming!

REMINDER: School Cash Online Registration and PIN Information (Important for AP Exams)
MCPS has transitioned to a new online payments system called SchoolCash Online (SCO). This will be the preferred method of payment for all school-related fees, excluding school lunches. SCO will help increase efficiency and security at schools by making payments directly into schools’ bank accounts and eliminating the need for teachers to handle money. A processing fee will be included on all items available for purchase, regardless of the type of payment used on SCO or at the school. Parents/guardians can register for an SCO account here. When adding students to your account, you will be asked for the student PIN number. This PIN number is not the student ID. Parents/guardians should have received the PIN via email from scopinprocess@mcpsmd.org in early August and then again in early September. If you need support with the registration process or adding your student(s), please email MCPS’ community support drop box at communitytechsupport@mcpsmd.org. You can also contact Mrs. Miller, school financial specialist, via email at Jacqueline_N_Miller@mcpsmd.org, to obtain your students PIN number.
