Mrs. Loppnow's News & Notes
Week of January 8, 2018 SKOL VIKINGS!
A Note from Mrs. Loppnow:
Hello Parents!
Happy Friday! I hope you all were successful at getting back into the routines of a full week. It was a little tougher than I thought. Like so many others, I am hanging on to the "crud" that I had over Winter Break. Not fun! I'm finally starting to feel like myself again. As always, the kids persevered with a guest teacher and earned many compliments for their hard work. I continue to be so, so proud of what they are accomplishing!
I want to introduce Parker, our Second Trimester KINDNESS AMBASSADOR. Parker was chosen by her peers and I to represent our classroom this trimester. I am very proud of her hard work and determination to be kind to EVERYONE! She is honest, to a fault, and is often one of the first to step up and help someone in need. Thank you, Parker!
SKOL VIKINGS! I sure hope our Vikings bring home a WIN this weekend! It's definitely an exciting time to be a VIKINGS fan! Even if you are not a fan, you must admit, they have had a great season. Who's your favorite player and WHY?? Mine is Kyle Rudolph. Not only is he a fun player to watch, he is an amazing human OFF the field as well! His work with the Children's Hospital is very admirable. As a nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year, he has proven his commitment to our community and most specifically, our kids! What a guy!
Enjoy your weekend!

A Peek into this week and next!
Writer's Workshop: This week we focused on a new mentor sentence using the mentor text Verdi by Janell Cannon. Our focus was on comparative and superlative adjectives. Comparative adjectives are COMPARING two things, Superlative, compare more than two things. For example, we learned that Mrs. Loppnow is old. Gao is (one day) older than Alex. Mrs. Loppnow is the oldest!
Content: ANIMALS, ANIMALS, ANIMALS! This week the students learned about Animal Adaptations, including adaptations animals use for protection. Some examples include camouflage, poison, and mimicry. The students then created their own animals for our Animal Mania project. Their animals needed to include adaptations. Take a peek below for some examples. Next week we will begin thinking about habitats and how an animals adaptations relate to their environment.
Reader's Workshop: We continued hunting for text features this week and used what we have learned on our Animal Mania posters. Many included Did you Know boxes, captions, sidebars, graphs, and labels. It is so exciting to connect our content areas to all areas of learning! Next week, the students will continue to use their chosen animal books to find text features and investigate the purpose of each feature.
