Congrats National Geographic Bee Winners!

On Friday, January 11, Aquin held the 2019 National Geographic Bee for students in grades 4-8. Each class sent the top 2 students to the school Bee. This year's winners were both 8th graders as Kamdyn Raymond came out on top. Hannah James claimed 2nd place. Way to go, Jays!

Blood Drive Success!

Aquin’s Servant Leadership held a blood drive for the Rock Valley Blood Center on Wednesday, January 9. This year we had an awesome turn-out as 34 people registered to donate, and 29 were able to do so--making this one of our biggest donations in recent years.

Thank you to all who were able to donate and save lives (and earn a jean day today)!

Disappearing Forks

Over the past two years, Beltline Cafe has had an increasing problem at lunch with students throwing away their silverware--specifically forks--as students empty their trays. We have spoken to both lunches repeatedly about being more aware as they empty trays. We also changed the procedure for emptying trays to help decrease the amount of silverware being discarded.

However, to date, about 500 forks have been purchased in the last two years by Beltline and Mrs. Brubaker (not the school). Currently, we have about 15 forks left. Total!

We will not use plastic utensils because they are wasteful, are not good for the environment, and sends the wrong message about this problem. We are asking for help from home.

  • Please discuss with your student(s) about being more conscious of what they're doing when emptying their tray.
  • Feel free to donate silverware to the school.
If the problem persists, Deb will have to raise her prices in order to cover the costs associated with replacing silverware. Please feel free to reach out to Deb with any ideas that will help result in a solution. Thank you!

(8th grade boys are lifting at the senior high sessions.)

Help for a Community Member

We have received a request for help for an elderly man in Freeport. The request came through Amber Macklin, the Independent Living Advocate for Stephenson County.

She has an elderly gentleman who is in need of new window frames, a screen door, and flooring for his home. The gentlemen cannot afford to pay anyone for the service, but possibly could work something out as a 'pay-it-forward'.

His heating bill is through the roof due to the cold air coming through the windows. The flooring in the home is extremely weak and dangerously compromised. The back door is secured with rope, and the front door's screen is gone. He has someone to do the flooring, but cannot afford the materials (like wood). She is looking for anyone to donate the time if they can find the materials--or both the time and materials. The gentlemen cannot afford to move, additionally, his health could not stand the stress. He would love to stay in his home, and we would love to keep him out of the nursing home.

If you are able to help with this gentleman, please contact Amber Macklin at RAMP: 2155 W. Galena Avenue in Freeport. Following are her phone numbers and email:

God bless you for any help you can offer!
